Who else gets annoyed at having to pay for parking ?

I don’t mean just at Disney / Universal etc ( though that is a scandal of the highest order ) but just in normal everyday life ?

It really irks me at having to pay. I will often spend an out of proportion length of time looking for a cheaper or free parking spot , or one that involves a much longer walk to wherever I want to be, just to avoid having to pay / paying ‘ over the odds ‘.

Last week paying to park by a beach in Cornwall - typically a fiver . Today at a football match where the game cost £6 to get in , the parking was £3 .

I get it’s not a huge amount of money , and I’m a tight Northerner , it just really gets my goat

Do others feel the same as me ?

Depends where it is. For example if it is say the Lake District I don't mind because it helps with the costs of the upkeep of the area.
However as a fellow frugal Northerner it gets my goat at the cost of parking in some town centres. For example I work in an town which is dying as shops continue to close. The council want to encourage people back in. Parking? £1.20 an hour! Now that doesn't seem much, however I can go shopping and pay a lot less in Newcastle or park for free at the Metrocentre, so it's a no-brainer

Oh yes ! I will walk miles to avoid paying for parking ! Cornwall was a right rip off. Went to Padstow, £6 for the park and ride….and there wasn’t even a ride, couldn’t run the bus due to covid, so long walk in to Padstow and massive hill back.

I like shopping in Bury because I know where to park

Oops . We found a housing estate in Padstow half way up the hill for free 😂

ME. Especially when you’ve paid to go there like theme parks, leisure centres etc. I can count on one hand how many times I’ve been to our town centre this year (literally) I will go to supermarkets and out of town retail centres instead. Not just free but much easier to park. I know it doesn’t help independents, but councils should do more to incentivise people in.

I will not pay to park in Cornwall. It is rather simple in that I will not countenance it. It is a total and utter rip off and Cornwall Council must soon run out of both yellow paint and restriction signs as they seek to drive people into car parks and gouge them.

I work at Truro Hospital, where they would charge me £240 a year. I park 2 miles away on a friends gravel in Threemilestone and walk.

When I go shopping in our local town, I park in Tesco which is close to the centre, has free parking for 2 hours provided you shop in the store and after which I buy a bottle of wine at £5.

If going into Falmouth (where I live), I know several places where I can park for nothing. If I can get into none of these, I go home again.

Beaches? Most I know of parking very near to and certainly my preferred ones, such as Swanpool. Those that I do not, I refuse to use.

Ironically in the face of this blatant opportunism, parking is free in County Hall for employees! It would seem that some are more equal than others.

Charges at the train station really annoy me. Ours cost £4.70 per day, if I drive to the next station down the line, it’s free - as we’re in a different county, we have to pay.

I also refuse to pay to park in town. We live about a 15 minute walk from the town and I always walk - even though it’s not a lot of money, it irks me. There used to be a car park at the top end of the town that was free for the 1st hour - council dropped this last year.

Completely agree. Parking charges are a large part of what’s killing our town centre.

Definitely killed the Community spirit in the Abbey, funnily enough it's Tesco with it's free parking brought it back.

Agree with everything but when it comes to beaches a big thumbs up must go to Frinton. All parking as free, their reasoning is as follows
“ one because we want people to visit our town and secondly, any income resulting from charging for parking would not even go to Essex County Council as this facility has been outsourced to N Essex Parking Parntership who would be the only ones to benefit from any profit. The town of Frinton would definitely not benefit, and neither would local councils.”
Well done Frinton!
