In the UK the biggest risk a while back at petrol stations was not if your card was out of sight, but the large scale organised crime use of chipped card readers. I would guess it was the same over there - they can skim your card in the machine you pay through.

(nowadays the biggest risk is simply owning a card - software hacking, card/people databases or even just "random" CC number generation means the criminals get hold of a number and boom, your card never even needs to have been used anywhere)

You can have your card scammed anywhere - Friends of ours had their card clones at a Sephora store .

We've lived here for 36 years. We've had our cards cloned 5 times, all of them in England. Our first day last year. We'd only used the card in Primark in Reading last year and when we tried to use it for lunch, someone had already tried to charge £2000.

The thing not ot do is, go in 'ask for $20 on 4, then leave your card there' .. go do the fuel, then go collect your card.
The longer the card is out of sight, the more risk.

Hence people just pay cash, then go back and collect the change.

If you have the Halifax Clarity card and online banking ( we have both ) you can track your payments as often as you want.
You can also withdraw cash at the ATM , then pay for your gas in cash if you prefer.
As long as you go online the same day and transfer the equivalent in cah onto your account not only will you not be charged but you will also get the Master Card wholesale rate which is as good as you can get.

But you don't have to leave your card to do what has been said here. You go in say $20 on pump for , pay the $20 on their machine then take your card with you and fill up. If the car fills with less than $20 then your card is only charged what you actually put in the tank.

I find you are fine with the big, busy chain stations whereas I've seen a bit of scammer behaviour at smaller more out of the way stations.

I've twice had the (quite run down, small, independant) Exxon station near the Western end of the 192 try and pull a fast one so I try to avoid places like this.

Many leave cards with total strangers novocastrian... allowing wait service to take a cc away to process the payment. I'm with you, never, ever let a cc out of sight, may not prevent fraud but it shows one is taking responsibility for their card.

been going since 2008, and paid for fuel on the card (fairfx and/or halifax clarity) at least 50% of the time (in recent years, more like 90% - these days we usually only take a couple of hundred in cash) and have *never* had an issue

we usually fill up at the stations around champions gate. i dont know whether that makes a difference or not.
