I used to use my CC for petrol off and on until my card was skimmed about 6 years ago. It happened in a newly opened (within the previous 24-48 hours) gas station where the 417 exits on to ID at LBV.

My CC was stopped (I had others). A call to the CC company informed me that the purchase had been put through about 5 hours after the actual purchase, so I assume that the cashier was a rogue.

Fortunately the attempted transactions at Best Buy and Walgreens by the miscreant were refused.

Now I only use cash at gas stations.

It does seem ridiculous that this is still an issue these days, but as many others gas stations are one of the few places I still use cash for and pay inside.

Obviously I also cry a little every time I visit one because of just how cheap it is to fill a standard SUV compared to the equivalent I drive at home. It's staggering.

Mostly I have to make sure I don't give them too much to avoid having to go back in for change! $30 is max I normally do and WaWa for me also.

I only pay for fuel in the uk with cash since my card was done. I know for sure it was the garage because I only ever used my credit card for fuel and nothing else. I was with the Halifax at the time and they were pretty good in picking it up and stopped the card. Fast forward to last year and I paid for my flights with my credit card and no problems. My current bank decides to then block my card after completing the transaction, why? Suspicious activity! Surely it would have been better to block the transaction first if it was suspicious? Am I missing something here?
