Credit card skimming

This news report about the increase in skimming may be of interest.

wftv/news/local/gas-...ings/947904595

We always use cash in Florida (not just for gas but also in restaurants) and I'm not suggesting that these statistics are worse than the UK or even typical of the Florida tourist areas but make your own judgements.

Ah, so it’s skimming machines they put on the pump. As most of us Brits CC won’t work at the pumps we always go inside to pay. ( one of the tips mentioned)
We normally use the Kmart gas station at Berry Town Centre and pay cash..

Good find Mick !

Wawa at 192/Avalon for us - $30 on pump 12 please

We also withdraw our $$ at the ATM there - they don't charge (although HSBC do of course )

So do we. Last month $30 took a full size from a range of 80 miles to around 350.

I only really posted because in my 15 years on here I've seen some genuinely anxious posts from people worried about using CC at gas stations. Sadly they didn't always get sympathetic advice as the risk of skimming for some Dibbers was not considered worth thinking about.

It was on the TV here the other night that one area has had no skimmers on the pumps for the last 2 years.

Simple answer. The local Sheriff got the owners to put a hasp and staple with a padlock on the pump door so the scummies couldn’t open them with the master key they have.

Simple answer to a big problem.

Me, I trust nobody. Cash is King.

Mr T like you for us Cash is king in the Us we never use our us account
Debit cards other than to take $20 each out to keep them active from the cash machines we just nip into the bank and lift money
In restaurants we never let the server take a card away if we use it gas stations it’s cash only always
We were in a mom and pop local restaurant last trip and they had a notice
We and you don’t want to fund the scammers so we offer a 5% discount for cash nobody paid by card

Hiya Gadgey Mick - apparently many SW Fl petrol stations installed hardware that detects pump tampering, plus staff physically check the pumps usually twice a week or so... seems to be holding back the skimmers in some gas stations. It's unfortunate it's taken so long for petrol stations to actively make moves to stop the skimmers.

Used WaWa for cash this trip Gadgey, impressed with their surcharge free ATM, paid the interbank rate £ amount into our Halifax Clarity account, so no interest either, win-win

Bonny lass

Must be nearing that sad time to start packing the cases again. 12" of snow in Co. Durham at the minute.
