My dad was useless at DIY, cooking, gardening, TBH everything but what I learnt from his is how to get through family loss twice, and still be a wonderful humorous dad to 3 (sadly later 2) daughters, Mum died of cancer when the 3 of us were, 16,14 and 13 years of age. He had no close family close by and was basically left on his own to get us through this devastating time. Years later he lost my oldest sister who had an epileptic fit in the bath and drowned, if it had been me I would have just given up, but he got through many years of grief and became a great Granpa to my 3. How I wish he was here today to have a cuddle and a chat. Sorry for going off the topic a bit xx

I find these type of posts sad, many people don't have fathers to teach them things for various reasons. My father died when I was 2.5 years old and I am sure there are many others who have suffered sadness. I know I could just move on if I don't like the post but they make me uneasy.

We will all suffer sadness with regards to our fathers at some stage. I lost my father 5 years ago and there isn’t a single day I don’t think of him.

Sorry to hear you lost your father so young. Apologies if this thread makes you sad (And uneasy)but as you said you do have a choice to move on if you don’t like it. I know I do that with a lot of threads on here.

Nothing - he left when I was a toddler and never really bothered with us since- I could walk past him in the street and wouldn’t recognise him.
However that did teach me that no matter how exasperated or cross I get with my boys I would hopefully never give up on them and I hope it’s taught them the same values .

When I was 12 my dad taught me how to wire up a plug and change the fuse.

In my teen years he said 'Never a lender or a borrower be' if you want to remain friends. Found this to be so very true.

How to not be a parent 😂

I'm not sad about it at all. I never knew my bio dad and my step dad never deserved that title but I do have an awesome mum!

Threads about wonderful dads always make me a bit sad too. My dad taught me to ensure I found a man the complete opposite of him which I did. I’m sure he never knew he taught me this !
