Dehumidifiers

Sorry, bit of a boring thread but thinking of getting one, are they worth the cost?

I think it depends. Why do you think you need one?
Often it is better to try and understand the root cause of any damp problem.

we moved into our new place in Feb and it had a 1980's extension on the rear which is my daughters bedroom, had a damp patch in the rear corner, i cannot see the cause of it ( Im a carpenter and have worked in the building game for a long time ) the rear path is below the DPC

so we got this

appliancesdirect/p...xoC5KQQAvD_BwE

it was £100 and we put it on in the morning for a few hours, no damp now, so hopefully its worked

We use one in the spare bedroom to dry washing in the winter, very effective and cheaper than a tumble dryer.

There are two types Desiccant or refrigerant dehumidifiers.

We use a Meaco Desiccant dryer which also warms the room

We have a Meaco (DD8l Junior) desiccant in the conservatory. Had it for about 9 years, bought it because of condensation when the conservatory was first built during a very wet spell. I still put it on every morning in cold weather as it brings the humidity down and warms the room. It is small and light enough to carry around and I move it in a small bedroom to dry my washing in winter.

it all depends why you think you need one!

i use mine to remove damp from the cupboard under the house after particularly bad rainstorms, but its useful for drying washing and our tent/gazebo if they get packed down when wet - just lay them out in the garage and dehumidify.

was also useful after shampooing our lounge carpet

Thanks for your replies, we think we need to get one as we have a lot of condensation on the bedroom windows in the winter and a slight area of mould is coming in one of the bedroom, nothing huge but just thinking one may help.

it certainly wont hurt!

although getting to the root of damp issues is key... a lot of the time, its due to lack of ventilation/airflow

We have one in the winter as the bathroom fan is not up to the job. It is good but if on too long (or if hubby puts it on in the summer surreptitiously) I get scritchy dry eyes.
