Good Cruise ?
Can anyone recommend a good cruise liner ?
It doesnt matter what company i book with either. Looking on net just now but as a first time cruiser there is so much to choose from. Not really looking for a formal cruise but def a medium size ship at least with all the amenities. Looking to go for up to 7 days, Caribbean Cruise preferably. Want a 2 night stay in NY before we go or on the return, is this possible ? I know you can have a couple of nights stopover in NY but im unsure if i can do this on a Caribbean cruise or if it needs to be another intinery. Thanks for any help you can offer. |

We went with virgin a few years ago and stayed for 7 nights in Barbados and the 7 nights cruise on the Fascination a Carnival cruise ship. I found the carnival cruise perfect for us as it wasn't too snobby, you could dress up or down as you pleased and could eat in the posh main restaurant or one of the casual restaurants. The cruise ship was amazing, we had tours booked for each island we visited and then spent most of our evenings watching shows or in the casino. I loved cruising and definitely want to cruise again when DD is a bit older.

We did our first cruise in 2004 with Princess Cruises - on the Golden Princess (just me and DH)- it was absolutely fantastic - much better than we were expecting and not formal in any way - even on the formal nights you didnt have to get dressed up.
What we liked was the anytime dining - in either the buffet court or in one of the more formal restaurants. Just loved the buzz of the ship. Last year we did another cruise, agian with Princess, this time on the Star Princess and we took our daughter. We did an overnight stay in Miami before having a week on the ship and then a week in Orlando. I think they do a cruise to the Carribbean via New York too, where you can add extra nights on before or after your cruise. The verdict off my DD (then 14) was that the cruise was far better than Orlando and Disney! We have friends who have been with Royal Carribbean and they said their ship was fantastic too. |

Thanks so much for your replies
As im a cruise virgin i just dont know where to start. I have 2 DS's, one 17 and the other 15 and DH was wondering how they would enjoy it so im glad that your 14 yr old loved it. Thats encouraging for me. The formal thing just doesnt get me at all, i like to dress up of course but having to carry lots of dresses about etc just isnt appealing at all. Of course i will wear one but i want the choice to be dressy casual at dinner too. I cant see my DH and DS's wanting to wear tux's ! Really want to get this booked up asap aswell. So i suppose the next question is it best to book with a specalist tour operator or with the cruise line itself. Sorry for more questions |

One of the princess ships leaves from NY - to the Caribbean, I'm sure. Some of the other lines may as well. I can recommend Princess, although it isnt as good as it was - its still good. We are doing Royal Caribbean in October - purely cos it leaves from Pt Canaveral and the itinerary, my friends love this line so it will be interesting.
Ocean Village is very casual, as are Island Cruises. Ocean Village I used to be the Arcadia and is a lovely ship with big cabins, we did 2 weeks in the Caribbean in 2001 and loved it, not too big either. Have a look at cruisecritic loads of info there, also Brits Guide to Cruising. Be careful though. I expected to hate it and only went cos my parents took us - the whole family - its cost me a fortune since!

Lol i will be careful.
I was wondering where this had moved to, thought this was for DCL only soz Originally i was surprising my mum and dad with a Disney Cruise but unfortunately when we are travelling to Orlando, there wasnt much to chose from in the 3 or 4 night cuises. (Nov) All expensive cabins and it seemed silly money. So i thought i could get 2 holidays with a cruise this summer for the same/similar money. I will do DCL hopefully in the next year or 2. So anyway, here i am still on the cruise idea for July this year now. Still going to suprise mum and dad with the cruise as im going to take them with me. I love NY and dad would love to see it, hence why i want the stay there at start or end of trip. I had a look at one of the RCI boats today, Freedom of the Seas i think it was, £1230 flying from Glasgow to MIami, then 7 night cruise, then Miami to Newark for NY for 3 nights then Newark to Glasgow. This is for the end of July per person. I still have to get accomodation in Mami and NY so may come up to nearer £1400 a person. Dont know what to do as this is my first time booking this and im soooo confused on whats a good price, whats not etc etc. As i have 6 to pay for too it could get out of hand lol... she says this whilst hiding receipts from DH Ideal a flight to Newark then a cruise from NY then back to Glasgow. Oh, why is cruising so difficult ? |

Princess cruises really cater for the teenager - they have their own place to chill out and everything!
Last year over one quarter of the passengers (around 2500 all together) were children under 17 years of age. You wouldnt have thought so, we hardly saw any... obviously too busy doing there own thing at their place! We were amazed when it broke down the ages and it said a quarter were that young. The ship is so big that you dont see them and not aware that they are even there - or come to think of it even 2500 people on one boat isnt crowded! Good luck with your planning. |
