Hi all,

Got back yesterday so thought I'd update you about my coeliac and vegetarian experience. I have taken photos but don't know how to upload them - will get hubby to have a look when he gets time.

Anyway, overall I managed to eat well with the majority of chefs able and eager to help. I've listed the restaurants I ate at, with the best at the top.

Le Cellier - Mushroom risotto with asparagus - this was absolutely beautiful and tasted wonderful. Dessert was sorbet, which I ate just about everywhere.

Maya Grill - An add on as we hadn't originally booked to eat here. The chef had gluten free pasta and created a vegetable dish with a tomato sauce. I hadn't eaten pasta for almost 14 days at this point and it was just delicious. Again sorbet for dessert.

Tusker House - We went here for lunch and wow, it was amazing. We actually ended up eating here twice as the amount of food I could eat was fab! The chef accompanied me to point out what I could eat. Put it this way, I filled two plates with different food, combinations of salad, rice, tofu curry, etc.

Tangeriene Cafe - I know this is counter service, but they can create a vegetarian sampler which is fine for coeliacs. They swapped the cous cous for rice and it was just delicious. I received a gluten free bread roll and extra salad in replace of the falafel which was fried with the chicken nuggets. No dessert but I can forgive them for that.

Kouzzina - Received the best table in the house... and the most obnoxious server ever. Chef created a plate full of side dishes including brussel sprouts (I love sprouts)... erm... I can't actually remember what was on my plate! It tasted ok but I wouldn't rush back. All the sides are on the menu. My dessert was lovely though. A gluten free brownie with berries and icecream presented beautifully. Must get those photo's on!

Hoop Dee Doo - I had absolutely no expectations about this meal. To be honest, I expected to enjoy the Sangria and not eat. How wrong I was! The chef created a very simple meal for me but it was absolutely beautiful. Grilled veggies including mushrooms, squashes, white onion with a jacket potato. Strawberries for dessert. I really enjoyed it!

Crystal Palace - Chef talked me round the buffet. There wasn't a lot to eat to be honest but I managed with some broccolli, green beans and fruit salad. The chef did offer to make me something but as this was day 1, I didn't think to accept the offer! Doh!

Ohana - I was most excited to eat here! I have been through the food porn thread and thought Ohana looked amazing. I was sooooo looking forward to being spoilt with food! The chef came out (not the infamous chef) but someone else. He made a huge creation which was more artwork than something to eat. It contained rice, tofu, vegetables and a gluten free 'basked' that tasted corn based. The tofu was bland, the rice was inedible and the vegetables lacked flavour. Also, and I guess this is a personal thing - I choose not to eat, touch or cook meat - yet had to have it dangled over my food for other people to have it on their plate. Dessert was truly wonderful though and this is why Ohana was not my worst place to visit. The chef had created the most amazing flourless chocolate pudding. Not a sorbet in sight!

Boma - I have always been a huge Boma fan. As a vegetarian I have always eaten really well. As a coeliac/vegetarian with an allergy to red onion too, I have to admit my choice was limited now. We had booked Boma twice but ended up cancelling the second visit. I felt that the chef had little interest and didn't offer to prepare me anything I could eat. The promise of a gluten free brownie never materialised and I was extremely disappointed. I should add that everyone else loved it as usual.

Cinderella's Royal Table - A celebration eveing to celebrate my youngest's 8th birthday. I suppose I should just comment on the food but can't help to add that I was truly disappointed by the whole experience. The chef came out to see me AFTER the rest of the party had started to eat their starters! I asked the server why I was eating alone and he blamed the chef. When I asked if all the meals could be brought out together he shrugged and moved on. We were rushed through the whole sitting and the reason why I wasn't allowed to eat with the rest of our party was that they wanted to us out asap ready for the next lot of diners! Anyway, I've waffled... starter was salad, main course was cubed vegetables in a tomato sauce with a side of potato. It tasted nice, but whilst my food was hot and edible, everyone else left their main course. Guess what I got for dessert?

Sanaa - I was really excited to eat here. I love Indian food and the chef confirmed that none of the vegetarian meals contained gluten. An hours wait after out ADR time and we were still waiting. A free appetiser was promised. The appetiser was bread and dips! I did eventually get 'something' after my hubby pointed out that I couldn't eat anything so was happy... for a little while anyway. I chose rice with the spicy cauliflower and potato (aloo gobi) and also a cheese paneer. For me, both dishes were simply awful without flavour or seasoning. Dessert was sorbet and berries.

I know I have missed restaurants but will add them when I get the pictures added.

Thanks for the reviews, a real mixed bag there - good to hear about Tusker House as that's somewhere I'm considering for next year.

We've eaten in a few of the places mentioned on this thread and had both good and bad experiences like many people with coeliac do however, on this trip we are celebrating a special anniversary and are hoping to find that little extra special meal somewhere if anyone has any recommendations they are gratefully received.

Can I just ask if any coeliacs on this thread have any other coeliac related conditions other than diabetes? ie Ataxia, vestibular, small vessel disease etc? Not trying to be nosey but would be helpful to speak to some people who may have similar experiences.

Secondly if anyone is travelling to Spain, Cuba or South America and needs help preparing coeliac info eg Tengo una enfermedad que se llama celiaca etc...I have an illness which is called coeliac disease etc just PM me and I'm happy to help

Hi Rea, for a special meal I'd recommend Flying Fish, the Chef advised I could have anything on the menu and he would customise it for me. Also, Blue Zoo at the Dolphin, atmosphere is more 'grown up', the chef will usually email you beforehand.

Wishes Dessert Party

Been back a week and thought I'd share some pictures from the Wishes Dessert Party:



This is a plate of goodies that the manageress brought to the table, along with a complete list of ingredients from all the food on offer. The photo below shows a plate collected by me with other wheat free offerings. They were all delicious, apart from the apple sorbet!



Can highly recommend this - a fantastic view of the fireworks too.

Rea, if you are looking for somewhere special to eat away from Disney, try Seasons 52. We had a fantastic meal there, they were very helpful and accommodating. None of their desserts were gluten free apart from the fruit, but the server brought me a dish of just the mousse from the Key Lime Pie - yummy!

Never did get to try the gluten free muffins, Clare - maybe next time...

gluten free places to try

just thought I would let you know that I had a lovely dinner at BJ Brew-house at the loop & also lunch at Smokey Bones,
They both have a specific gluten free menu just ask.
Beware however smokey Bones would have fed a family of 4
