Why are Avis so much cheaper than Alamo?
What am I missing? Insurance cover looks the same. £100 difference is making me nervous to book with Avis.

Not missing anything. We have rented through Avis 5 or 6 times now and never had an issue. Have you looked on the BA website and selected 'Car only'? They also use Avis but can quite often be cheaper than direct
