As part of the BBC's charter, it has to be impartial. It may not seem to be terribly impartial at times, but that is usually because it is representing a side of a story that we don't agree with. If you feel it isn't fulfilling that part of it's charter, complain and make them do better. I can guarantee that their impartiality is 100% better than that of Sky News.

As for advertising, see how well your advertising on ITV and other channels fares if the BBC with 31% of the market, is required to advertise to support it's service, a service that they are required to provide. If you watch ITV of any other Free to air service, then the licence fee is supporting these services by the BBC not competing for advertising revenue.

Also, how many people say they don't want to pay for a licence fee, but happily pay for Sky, at stupid amounts a month?

I am 100% for the licence fee

For a long time, I thought it provided good value for money, compared to the paid for options.

But I have moved on, it is time for it to go. The idea of having to pay for a licence in order to own a TV in the UK is outdated.

I have complained about the bias shown on a recent BBC QT episode with 'plants' in the audience...all you get back is an acknowledgement and a pithy woke response blah blah blah... time for change.

I wouldn't say its impartial after watching months of politics and news in 2019. I also listen to Jeremy Vine most lunchtimes and you couldn't get anyone more liberal than him.

I have in the past complained to the BBC about their impartiality and got the same pithy response "no we aren't".

Scrap it the only good things they show that we enjoy are Call the Midwife and the Sir David Attenborough documentaries that were only part funded by them anyway. I can see why people are taking down their tv aerials and refusing to pay the license fee. It’s a loop hole apparently.

It could be interesting to ask whether those in favour of scrapping the TV Licence would pay a subscription ?

My objection to the present TV Licence is the expectation that the less well off must help fund a service they may prefer not to spend their money on for those of us who would be happy to pay for BBC to benefit from.
I don't believe it can continue to be acceptable to criminalise and imprison people for not wishing to, or not being able to afford to, fund BBC.
The defense that nobody goes to prison for not having a TV Licence is presenting alternative facts. People go to prison for not paying their fines, decriminalising should happen urgently.
It is also unacceptable to force people to fund BBC if they would be otherwise content with other channels and services.

A huge part of BBC costs are news and current affairs. The cuts announced by Fran Unsworth of 450 staff are a start, but there is huge duplication and excessive pay. Highlighted by recent BBC women presenters high profile complaints such as Samira Ahmed's tribunal wherein she could be awarded £600k backdated pay, and £3k per episode of presenting Newswatch for 15 minutes.

I think JV really does 'dumb down' some of the issues he raises sometimes. Yet on other occasions he manages to discuss serious issues successfully - no consistency.

Subscriptions? That's a fair point and would obviously be a second order effect IF the licence was scrapped. I wanted to keep it simple as in a Yes/No poll.
