Hope the OP got sorted but if posting the type of comments I did on getting ESTA's first saves even one person the worry this pour soul has had then it is worth it
One of the problems with a thread like this is contributors (including me) end up repeating themselves

So here I go

There are very rare conditions under which an ESTA can be declined once issued. The last time was (I think) 2012 when due to a bug in a software upgrade to the CBP systems- some travellers were marked as overstayers and their authorisation were revoked. They were blissfully unaware of this until they next went to travel on the same ESTA or Passport and found out they were declined. Because a traveller is responsible for their own travel documents they couldn't claim on their insurance and lost their holidays

This was a very rare occurrence but it did happen. We are due to travel on August 2nd this year and there is a software update (due to the CBP Esta system) between now and our travel date and I for one will be checking the status of my existing ESTA between that and the point of travel.

I thought the software update was scheduled for 1st July (having first been scheduled for 27th June). Has it been put back again?

I suppose because if you travel every three or four months, at some point you’ll be renewing your ESTA with only three or four months until your next trip? 🤷🏻

Dont panic you will be fine.

If you have answered yes to the first question, you can reapply in 24 hours. It is the only one that is reset and they are aware of the scrolling wheel issue, which is why they let you apply again.

I know this as it happened to me in February and reapplied and was successful obtaining the Esta the next day.

I think someone on here (possibly on the other long running ESTA thread) said it had been put back a week.

Sat all morning doing our Estas. Checked and rechecked all 7. Son and daughter in law are doing theirs at the weekend so I only had 7 to do this time round. All paid for and pending authorisation. Will check after dinner this evening if they are going to let us in. 🙏 Now I'm going to get in the sun for a few hours to do my gardening.

Currently due on the 8th at last time of checking... But might have changed again.

Interesting. Just checked and the red banner on update has gone. Perhaps it's my cookies?

When I go to apply for an ESTA (I don't need one but was just looking) I get a red banner about applying at least 72 hours before. That's all.

I sat this morning and did ours. 7 of them, 3 hours on a slow laptop. Checking and rechecking. Photocopied the group application. Just went back in and all approved. Such a relief! 16 weeks 😁
