We had a fast pass last month for our evening in A.K, it was very busy so in that sense at least I'm glad we had the fp. We found the show though to be really boring, not something I'd bother seeing again.

Skip it. Its not in the same league as Fantasmic which is unmissable. Sorry I wasted a fastpass on it. Time is better spent in Pandora or on Everest which is great at night. The line goes to 5 mins whilst ROL is on then jumps to 25 when it lets out!

When we was there a few weeks ago we had a vote...
1. Flight of Passage (after already queueing twice for it during the day) 2. Rivers of Light Option 1 won by a big majority (4 to 0)... so off we trotted to Pandora for a 30 min wait...

We visited Animal Kingdom a few times, so we decided that we would go on the night during a pool day so we could Fastpass ROL and not waste the day without getting other Fastpasses. ROL didn't blow us away, but, we were glad we saw it, the Fastpass got us front row as well.

Rivers of Light is worth watching once, but it's my least favorite of all the current WDW nighttime shows.
Whether you need FP or not depends on how busy it is. I watched it on a very low crowd day a couple of weeks ago with a dining package, and they were letting standby people into the dining package area close to the show time. But it really is a very low capacity theatre so if you want to be guaranteed a seat then would FP (or dining package) it.

Relaxing at the Grand Floridian

We saw it in August and had seating as part of a meal oaclage. Had fantastic seat even when all the other sections were full.
Got to say, to me Rivers of Light is proof that Disney can, and does, occasionally get things wrong...
