Alamo said that if I have a prepaid reservation the hold is only $100 a week.
That is not my experience of Alamo Brits then.

Please excuse me butting in.

We have just hired a car from Alamo Brits and it was £43 cheaper to pay in arrival so that's what we went for.

Now I'm thinking that may not be the wisest move as we only have a £1200 limit on our Clarity card and a big chunk of that is going to be used for the car hire!

So does anyone know how much Alamo Brits hold in addition to the rental amount? It wouldn't be so bad if it was only the rental amount...

Would they take a prepaid credit card instead?

Why do they take it at the end of the rental period? Can we not pay by cash or debit card when we pick it up and just leave the credit card details for unforseen issues as we would with pre-booking?

My experience has been that the cost of the rental is held, why they charge on return rather than collection is a question for Alamo I think.

Alamo informed me yesterday over the phone the $200 per week "hold" on a credit card on arrival. These funds won'tbe available during your trip. I don't know why they don't just have clarity on these issues?
I am going to change to Alamo Brits because they have told mepre-paid reservations is a hold of $100 a week instead. We also have to have a hold for our hotel room and also for our cruise so need to make sure all the "hold" funds are on the card prior to travelling.

If posters are concerned about the amount on hold I would get a credit limit increase to be safe. It's frightening how much they will give you, quite sad really!

However I was advised not to drop that limit later as that effects your credit rating as it looks suspicious on your file

Sadly, we rent our home (always have) and don't use credit much at all so have no good history (no bad either) to make us attractive to credit card companies.

We have a Natwest card with £1500 on it too (had that a few years) and have just applied for the Clarity one because it's cheaper but got a £1200 limit on that one. The blurb says we have to wait 6 months to be considered for a limit raise.

I think we may have to go down the prepaid credit card route as we have the money in the bank - just want to be able to spend it as safely as possible.

I don't think I'll ever get my head round it all - most complicated holiday I've ever taken!

Similar things happen in restaurants with some cards. They ringfence some money to cover service charge (I think) and hold it until the transaction is cleared normally in a day or two.
