My salon donates to our local food bank every year. We’ve just done our food drop which included toiletries and things like selection boxes, crisps etc. They like treats at this time of year as well as the regular tins and pasta etc.

I donate via my local one ran by Steve Chalk

They will take mince pies with alcohol as I check their website - each week they say what they have a glut off (eg breakfast cereal and laundry products ) but things like fresh bread and toothpaste seem to be needed this week so that is what I will get when I next go shopping

This thread has brought back childhood memories of making Harvest Festival food boxes and delivering them to the elderly in the community- do schools still do this I wonder? I used to love that.

The school where I am a governor used to do this until quite recently but after a bit of consultation decided it wasn’t the best use of the donations received. We now send it to a local food bank and family centre. Not to forget the local elderly folk, the children bake biscuits and distribute these with a lovely hand written message.

I guessed some dibbers would be involved in helping with food banks (and even homeless shelters), because there's lots of decent people on here.

It's been helpful with the suggestions of things to donate to food banks (rather than tins of beans), and it sounds like my thread has reminded a few people to donate, who like me aren't mean, but it's not something they remember to do.

I put one item per week into the food bank collection box at my local supermarket. I vary between staples like beans, cereal etc and some items such as packs of biscuits. I often put in items that are good for childrens treats

This thread is amazing for people's generosity of time and goods but heartbreaking that so many people have to use foodbanks and they are seen as the norm.
Please think about this on Thursday as you vote

You donating is definitely worth more than giving me a like. I'm really pleased that my thread will hopefully help a few more people not go hungry this Christmas (and at other times of the year).

I donate a few things each week - it only costs me a couple of pounds and honestly we'd spend that on treats for ourselves without giving it much thought. My local sains express store has even added a donation box for xmas hopefully making it easier for people who don't make it to the main store to give something.

I know ocado have an option to donate online they do £2.50/£5 or £10 options and they match the donation providing fresh foods requested to the charities they work with.

Things like tinned fruit, longlife milk and freefrom items are often featured on the needed lists my local stores have.
Last week I was in morrisons (only get there a couple of times a year) and they had a range of own brand freefrom items really cheap compared to everywhere else so I added a selection of those to the food bank collection box in store.

Over xmas I do donate more as the demand on food banks increases and parcels may need to last families longer/cover more meals than usual due to the extra holidays. I give the kids a budget and let them pick items to donate too.
