Part of me just wants to book it so it’s done, but they’re fleecing people obviously to recoup their losses from last year
I don't think you can really suggest they are 'fleecing people' the airline buisness is like any other. Its a buisness and reacts to supply and demand, with the current pent up demand plus the vouchers that are linking passengers to airlines they have reacted to demand by increasing prices.

The cost of fuel has also shot up and the need to pay for aircraft, in some ways by increasing prices thay are managing demand.

The same is happening with car hire, costs have shot up because of the pandemic sell of of vehicle which help keep the companies in buisness. Price increase limits demand to a manageable level.

Things will not change for a couple of years, the general Dibb advice is find a price be it airline, car hire, hotel that you are happy with an book it then don't look back.

No-one can predict price changes for this year this is unprecedented so no-one can tell you what the allogrythm for price is.

I'm sure you know this but for the sake of understanding for others 'five seats left' doesn't indicate 5 left on the plane it indicates five left in that fare bucket so when those five are sold more will become available at a higher price.

Can't comment on your route specifically but we're looking for Heathrow/Gatwick to MCO in May ideally direct, and they were cheapest on release day. They have climbed ever since and now cost £1500 more for the four of us.
Am holding out hope that they will come down again but worrying that availability is dwindling. And spending lot of time daily searching and worrying about it. Weighing up the relief of having it sorted against the extra cost is a tricky dilemma!
