Given the stick the government got last time for not putting restrictions in earlier, im perplexed at the stick they're getting now for being proactive rather than reactive.

Exactly, I will be worrying about the possibility of testing positive for the whole trip, spoils the purpose of a holiday for me. The fact you can test positive without any overly obvious symptoms as well…

Personally I am not annoyed with the government. I think they are damned if they do and damned if they don’t and have been since day one.

Regardless, there is an extra complexity to deal with, a potentially very expensive one, that I need to factor in.

Additionally, this variant appears to be highly more transmissible, with a suggestion that doubling time of cases could be as short as just three days.

If that proves to be accurate then cases will soon grow to large numbers. Omicron would have to be significantly less potent in order to positively offset the increased transmissibility.

People may care to have a read of mathematician James Ward's analysis on this. First tweet here, open it to read the full thing: twitter/JamesWard73/stat...553615885?s=20

TL;DR: multiplying a very large number (cases) by a small percentage (infected people who need hospital assistance) can still give you a pretty large number (of people taking up hospital beds).

Although, it's likely too late now to meaningfully slow Omicron spread in the UK now, so it's certainly valid to ask: what's the point?

The additional costs are ridiculous I cannot disagree there.

Well I’ve just spoke to VH. I can change dates and pay the difference by putting our trip back from next month to jan 2023 or have a voucher. I have about 10 days to decide what to do……🤔

Is there no option of refund anymore? I guess would that only be an option if we were not allowed to travel?
Hadn't fully thought of that scenario.

It looks like there is no press conference today, just Javid giving a statement in the Commons at 5pm.

I understand it from a cost perspective, but from the perspective of worrying about testing positive and needing to isolate, if you fall ill out there with Covid symptoms I would hope people would test and not just fly home anyway if you get me?
