I need a funeral reading
But can’t find anything I like. Maybe I’m being too fussy lol.
I posted last week that my dear mother in law passed away and I’ve now been asked to do a reading. Anyone got any nice ones I can read? She wasn’t religious so I’m trying to stay away from that side of things. I quite like candles on the water from Petes dragon but obviously I’m not actively seeking Disney lol. Any ideas? |

I love Funeral Blues by W H Auden. It's the reading from 4 Weddings and a Funeral and I would like it read at my funeral as I love both the film and the poem. But, I don't know if it is entirely suitable for your Mil.
I would look for something that meant something to her. For example, if she loved a particular part of the country, look for poems from there and see if any are suitable as funeral readings too, or if she loved Disney, maybe lyrics from certain Disney songs could be suitable. Alternatively, look at funeral poems online or get a book of funeral poems from the library to see if you can choose an appropriate one which would relate to your MiL in some way. Again, sorry for your loss. Hope the funeral goes as well as it can. |

Death Is Nothing At All
By Henry Scott-Holland Death is nothing at all. It does not count. I have only slipped away into the next room. Nothing has happened. Everything remains exactly as it was. I am I, and you are you, and the old life that we lived so fondly together is untouched, unchanged. Whatever we were to each other, that we are still. Call me by the old familiar name. Speak of me in the easy way which you always used. Put no difference into your tone. Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow. Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes that we enjoyed together. Play, smile, think of me, pray for me. Let my name be ever the household word that it always was. Let it be spoken without an effort, without the ghost of a shadow upon it. Life means all that it ever meant. It is the same as it ever was. There is absolute and unbroken continuity. What is this death but a negligible accident? Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight? I am but waiting for you, for an interval, somewhere very near, just round the corner. All is well. Nothing is hurt; nothing is lost. One brief moment and all will be as it was before. How we shall laugh at the trouble of parting when we meet again! Feel no guilt in laughter, he’d know how much you care.
Feel no sorrow in a smile that he is not here to share. You cannot grieve forever; he would not want you to. He’d hope that you could carry on the way you always do. So, talk about the good times and the way you showed you cared, The days you spent together, all the happiness you shared. Let memories surround you, a word someone may say Will suddenly recapture a time, an hour or a day, That brings him back as clearly as though he were still here, And fills you with the feeling that he is always near. For if you keep those moments, you will never be apart And he will live forever locked safely within your heart. I read this reading at my FIL funeral x |

She didn’t really have many hobbies or go on holidays in the 19 years that I’ve known her. Everything she did was about family. Before her husband died she went to the local working men’s club every week. She drank a little and smoked a lot lol. She wasn’t outspoken or nasty but she was upfront and always told you what she thought, in a nice way. We used to sit and bitch about my ex’s (her son) new girlfriend cos neither of us could stand her lol. |

Another one I like is 'Do not stand at my grave and weep' by Mary Elizabeth Frye which could suit a straight talking lady like your MiL

My family used a version of this one, there are a few other verses:-
God saw you getting tired, When a cure was not to be. So He wrapped his arms around you, and whispered, "Come to me". You didn't deserve what you went through, So, He gave you rest. God's garden must be beautiful, He only takes the best And when I saw you sleeping, So peaceful and free from pain I could not wish you back To suffer that again.
