Thank you for all the replies - some food for thought. We would definitely prefer a non-smoking hotel. Just trying to balance out whether, because its going to be our only time, do I want to splurge on an iconic hotel?

My friends did the 50 dollar trick at check in and got an amazing room overlooking Paris and Bellagio fountains, with a try! Or just book one if it’s really important to you. I thought PH was really good, lots of shows there too, Zombie Burlesque was funny, would recommend Cris Angel though!
Whats the $50 dollar trick?

We’ve always had a tight budget in Las Vegas and I’ve never regretted staying in cheaper hotels to have more money to spend when there

Over the years we’ve stayed at the Venetian, Signature, Vdara, M Bay, Bally’s (now Horseshoe) and Tuscany Suites. The only one I would be reluctant to return to would be Tuscany Suites and that was due to the location rather than the room.

We had a great time at all of our stays

I would go for affordable personally but we are all different

Some Vegas forums and FB groups suggest putting a $20 bill in between your passport and credit card when you check in and you'll be given a 'free' upgrade in exchange for the tip you've given. I've not seen anyone suggesting $50, just $20.

I've never personally tried it and there are mixed feelings towards it online. Some people say you'll get the same upgrade by asking nicely.

When you check in you just offer them 50 dollars or 20 dollars and they will upgrade if they can! Also regarding smoke free casinos, I never noticed cigarette smell in Planet Hollywood, didn’t really see many people smoking. To be honest the only thing I smelt loads was weed but that was on the strip!

The $20 trick is nothing more than luck .

We had a amazing upgrade for free at Planet Hollywood , booked a standard room and got upgraded to a 2 bedroom , 2 bathroom suite , The lounge was massive . I never asked for it , when checkin in the lady just gave it to us .

Other times I've asked nicely if there are any upgrades and been told sure at xxx per night .

If you go at a quiet time and for only a few nights midweek you are much more likely to get a upgrade than if you go at a busy time / weekend .

As for smoking / non smoking , The hotels all do a good job of filtering the smoke in the casinos , The only one that I' ve found to be really bad is Treasure Island .
The smell of weed is worse these days than the smell of cigarettes.

Have a look at signature suits at the MGM. We booked through home away and Airbnb in the past.

We booked a trip yesterday for next April. It will be our third visit although 15 years since the last one.

We went iconic on our previous trips and were at the Bellagio both times, a fountain view room the second time.

We are doing it different this trip though and decided to go for a 1 bed with a kitchen. We picked Hilton VC Elara centre strip. The property looks nice and we think it is a good central location.

What about somewhere like the flamingo - there pool has just had a massive refurb? Really central and not expensive. Also linq is central as well.

I personally wouldnt stay at the bellagio - it's our least favourite casino. It's so busy. You can visit the hotel for a wander and watch the fountains no matter where you stay.
