Just relating a "friend's" experience. He was at grammar school in around 1960 aged 14 and school dinners were a shilling (5 pence to all you youngsters) a day.

There was a shop just outside the school gates, so he says, that sold a steak & kidney pie for 10d and a single Embassy for 2d.

A nice balanced diet.

Mick

We used to call them scab pies. They were individual pies and in the crust where they leave the small hole for the gravy to bubble out it would set like a scab.

Is it a feminine hygiene product. Am I allowed to say that these days?

What on earth, is this some kind of secret code language you guys are conversing in?
“Fancy a scab pie?”,
“No thanks, I’ll stick with my single and yogurt.”

The only thing I’ve understood is yogurt… I must have lived a sheltered life.
I’m guessing a single is ciggie?
