Did you need a VPN to book or does it appear on MDE?

No vpn, just booked it through mde app. I typed it into search box and then booked like normal adr procedure, choosing date and time slot. Its one of those you have to pay for it at the time so get your credit card ready.

So you actually pay upfront when you book? Is this common practice with Disney or only for certain restaurants

Yes for dinner shows, Halloween Parties and Dessert Parties etc.
For normal restaurants, you just add your cc for the reservation so that if for some reason you don't make it, then they'll take a small charge.

We managed to get a booking for August 12th at 4pm which we wanted but only able to get category 2.

Does anyone have experience if this seating and know whether you can further request downstairs as I don’t really want to be seated upstairs
