Teaching 17 year old to drive

My son is 17 today and the only thing he wanted was for us to take him out for his first driving lesson.

Obviously we got him presents and gave him money for lessons, but we also insured him on my car and off we went.

Oh my god, how utterly terrifying! And we were only in an empty car park!

Any tips on how to do this? Or where to go?

Thank you

His lessons start soon, but he’d really like to practice with us in between.

Daughter has been going out driving with her dad for a couple of weeks. They go around this time 8.30/9.00 o’clock for about an hour a night. We took out a 30 day insurance policy with Marmalade. It won’t affect my no claims then ! They started off on a retail park, went to a large industrial estate and husband feels confident now with her on the road, this time of day when it’s fairly quiet. They have been practicing reversing, parking in a bay, reverse parking. He is thinking know of carrying on teaching her and maybe book some lessons in a couple of months time. Lessons are just so expensive and it’s going well….so far ! Husband is a lot more patient than me.

Wow! That’s so amazing. Perhaps that’s what I’m doing wrong…leave the pair of them to it. I’m not sure my nerves are up to it.

I definitely couldn’t teach her myself. My family say I am one of those granny drivers and I’m not that confident myself after 30 years !

I feel your pain
Both our sons had driving lessons but were insured on my car
Any spare moment they wanted to go out driving with me 🫣🤷😫
It was as you say terrifying 😳it’s ok for the instructor as they’ve got dual controls
My husband wouldn’t do it 🙄
I’d always try to go to quiet roads also ones that were wide so they could practice 3 point turns
Thankfully they both passed first time
Wishing you lots of luck 🤩xxx

DS went with a driving instructor for a number of lessons then she messaged us to say that he was now ready to go out with us. I think this made both DH and myself more confident in taking him out. Just waiting for his test now! Good Luck!

This made me chuckle!
I started taking DS out after he’d had a few lessons with his instructor.
I think I’ve only had to shout out once 😂😂
He absolutely cannot go out with DH. He’s the worst passenger, not great at explaining things in a manner which doesn’t rub DS up the wrong way and just doesn’t deal with the situation very well at all. He’s been out with us twice and both times they ended up bickering.

Personally, I really wanted DS to have reasonable control of the car before I sat next to him on the road. I’d recommend that! Good luck 😉
