Livingin a multi-generation home - anyone else?

Just interested to see if anyone else is living in a multi generational home i.e. living with parents as an adult with or without a family in tow or those living with adult children.
I moved back in with my mum back in 2018 after my marriage broke down. Never intended to stay but my then boyfriend (now finace) moved in late 2019 after his living situation went belly up. Thought we would only be here for a year or two whilst saving for deposit but then covid happened, a baby happened and due to the current cost of living crisis we've pretty much been priced out of buying and renting would see us living pay day to pay day each month so we have accepted that we will be here for a while.
It works for us. My stepdad sadly passed away early 2019 and us being here provides my mum company and eases her financial situation as she's on a fixed income as a pensioner. We can still save and have a quality of life that we would not be able to have if we moved out. It's not without it's issues. Space is at a premium with three adults and a 1 year old but we make it work, long term we somehow have to turn a 2 bed home into a 3 bed and housework always seems to be an issue as I'm the only tidy one out of all of us!
Anyone else in the same boat? How do you make it work?

We have a 3 bed house ..

Myself , my husband, my daughter 23, her little girl 3 and my son 19 .. at weekends his girlfriend is usually here too .

In the week it’s not often we are all here at the same time , my husband works nights and my son sometimes works away .

It just “works” for us , We only have 1 bathroom and there’s never really any rows about it ,

We do have a large extension on the house at the back that we’ve had a new roof fitted and other work .Eventually it will be split into two room half that will be my sons bedroom , the other half a playroom, and my granddaughter will have my sons bedroom .

Housework wise , I probably do the lions share mostly because I like things done a certain way , That said I don’t go round tidying up after the adults in my home , they are big enough to do that themselves .

We could have moved and talked about to , but it’s not like they are all going to live here forever and then we’d end up downsizing .

I think the true meaning of family is making whatever situation work. Family have such different things to face at different times and it is lovely to see that this works well. X things can change rapidly especially at the moment.

I grew up with my papa living with us. So there was papa, mum and dad and me and my brother.
I know there were the odd squabble, that’s normal, but as a child I loved it. He was there till I was 20, when he died.
I thought it was normal and felt a bit sorry for other kids who didn’t have theirs with them.
His hobbies were gardening and horses. So I grew up picking what we wanted to eat out the back garden.
It was only when I was a teenager that some of his habits started to annoy me, but I wouldn’t change it for the world.

We're a 3 generational women only house! I was going through a divorce when my dad was terminally ill and he asked DD and I to house sit when my parents went on their last holiday together. He just asked us to stay when they got back, so we did. After my dad died, mum just asked us to keep living with her. It worked as my ex and I sold our house shortly after and I wouldn't have been able to afford a mortgage and living expenses on my salary. That was back in 2005 and we've been here ever since - DD is now 25. My mum is the tidy one and I know we drive her insane at times - especially now that I've been medically retired and am under her feet all day.

One of my closest friends lives with her parents, it works amazingly for them.
It all started as a joke about 15 years ago with her and her husband saying to her parents that they wish they could afford one of the 5 bed new builds being built in their village, then jokingly said that they and her parents should sell their current homes and buy one big house together. This soon turned into reality (they spent weekends and holidays together anyway).
So there is grandma, grandad, mum, dad and two teenagers living together. They turned the garage into a playroom when the kids were younger, its not the lads gaming room 😂 they also put a large conservatory on the house which is used as a second living room. It works really well for them, they never had child care issues etc my friend is an only child and always been very close to her parents 👍🏻

We used to live with my mum and dad while we saved for our own place. Me, my partner our daughter and then our son.
My brother used to come home from uni once a month.
I used to do most of the housework and cooking as my mum and Dad both worked.
When we moved out my mum would cry every night as she missed the grandchildren so much.
We moved out when our daughter was almost 3 and our son was 1

I have two friends that have specifically bought houses with granny annexes for their elderly mums main house has mum and dad and two kids, annexe has granny, both have a sitting room, kitchen and bedroom they can shut the door on. Works well for all of them either for childcare/dog sitting help and the granny is happy too with family around. In both cases they have a connecting door that can be shut from either side if they want some privacy and then other times they do eat and socialise together too.

My mum stayed with us for a while when she was unwell and older, it worked well but she wanted her independence so she moved into sheltered accommodation nearby which worked well for her and she visited us a few times a week for food and company and I visited her to help with her cleaning once a week.

I can see that living with families can work though, and can even have benefits - financially, company and care for older family members, babysitting etc.
