Going on Holiday without a member of your family
We used to go to Florida every year. Like many on here, it is our happy place. That was until last year, we didn't go to Florida because we had just got our dog and moved house.
We are going to Florida next week, my teenager is beside himself with excitement. I can't say that I am, in fact I'm full of anxiety about leaving our dog. My Mum is coming to stay in our house, so at least he will be in his own surroundings. Now, I have to say that before we got our sweet pug, If i had saw this post i would have probably thought "Good Lord woman, its just a dog" I work from home and he sleeps on our bed at night (the shame) So I spend all my time with him. Please tell me i'm not the only one that has felt like this? Currently looking at motorhomes and only having UK holidays from now on.

I know there will be lots of people who feel like this, but not me I'm afraid. I love our dog and spend all day with him as I work from home too, but he doesn't sleep on our bed or is even allowed on the furniture. I don't disagree with people that do allow, it, it's just something we've always chosen not to do. When we go on holiday he goes to my mum's and has a great time. He loves her, and she has a little dog that he gets on well with. She's retired, so walks them multiple times a day and he probably gets more attention from her than he does from us. I believe that he likes his holidays just as much as we like ours. The reunion when we come home and collect him is always great too. Personally, I wouldn't want to restrict myself from travelling because of him. We like the freedom a dog free holiday gives us, but equally, we will take him with us on UK breaks where pets are allowed.

You may feel worse because it’s the first time you have been away without him but he will be fine at home and you will still have a fabulous time. Plus you don’t get that horrible ‘oh no we are going home tonorrow’ feeling at the end of the holiday because you are going home to see your dog 💕

Dogs need holidays too, whether that's going to grandmas and getting spoilt or a good kennel where they get to socialise with other dogs .

You’re not the only one... there’s me too! But I love my holidays and the sunshine way too much to consider giving them up for the dog!
I do worry A LOT that something will happen to her while we are away or she will think that we have abandoned her... given that she stays with my mum and is spoiled rotten I don’t expect that worries her too much haha. But I think it is hard because you can’t explain to them what is going on and that you will return. The first holiday is the worst I found... the one benefit being that the coming home blues are not nearly so bad cus you’re little dog is waiting for you. You will be anxious, but once you are away your mum will keep you updated with how things are and you realise that they are fine, still eating, drinking and playing in their own surroundings and yes they will wonder where you are... but you will be back and you are giving them a fabulous life... so not really anything to feel guilty/anxious about xx

I have two sweet pugs, they have been spending most of the time with me for the last 15 months as I have been at home. They sleep on the bed, sit on the sofa. I think about then when I am on holiday and I look forward to seeing them again. But no, I cannot say that they dampen my enthusiasm for holidays.

Of course if you have cats they refuse to speak to you for at least two days when you get home... Tins of tuna help speed the process up though

I miss our dogs terribly when we're away, we get daily photos from our house sitters though which does help us not feel like we've abandoned them.
We often comment on how they'd enjoy certain aspects of our holiday - yep we're 'those' people.

Our dog loves staying at my parents when we go on holiday! We love him to bits but once we’re on holiday he’s a distant memory I relax knowing that he’s being spoilt and taken good care of and we’re lucky that he’s able to stay with my parents. If they weren’t able to have him we wouldn’t go away as I couldn’t put him in kennels. He’s quite nervous so that would be stressful for him and us. We also have holidays in this country and he comes with us but I couldn’t forego my foreign breaks.
I’m sure once you’ve left your dog for the first time you’ll be fine. |

Our dog has been left twice now since we got him both times sil has stayed in our house and his dog walker has done every day of that week while she’s been working. He has loved both occasions! He was so happy to see us last time he had an accident lol. I love him and miss him so much but I know we both had a good time so don’t feel bad about it. I am glad he was able to stay in his own castle I think that helped!
