Child entry letter

I am taking my granddaughter to Florida in March along with her mother and other family members.

My granddaughter is 4 years old and has a different surname from her mother. I am wary that immigration like names and ESTA's etc to all match.

Has anyone used a letter, signed by the other parent, to help with entry to the US. If so, could you please tell me if you wrote it yourself or did it have to be something a bit more legal?

TIA

I’ve always arranged the Esta’s for our family. Me and my partner aren’t married so my daughter has a different surname to myself but never been an issue. Never even questioned it. I’m pretty sure you will be fine.

I don't think this is true really. I didn't change my mine when I married and my step-niece has a different surname to both my brother and her mam and they haven't had any issues with either situation. Naming traditions vary by country/culture too so I doubt name alone is an issue.

You'd need a letter from her father if he is a custodial parent if you want to completely covered but my guess is it won't even be mentioned.

I have taken my grandson several times.
He has a different surname to my son and we have travelled with and without my son.
My son and grandson’s mother have little contact but she wrote a letter giving her permission for him to travel. Her pp number and mobile number was included.

We have never been asked to show the letter or answered any queries about his different name.
I do carry an updated version- just in case. He is, however, now old enough to speak for himself.

As her mother is travelling, I don’t think you will have an issue…they have ways of asking a child…even at 18 months, the IO just said my granddaughters name, and she looked around…but because neither of her parents traveled with me, we had a letter signed by both of them, also giving permission if she needed medical attention.
Now she is in my care, 🥰 I take a copy of the court papers.

We have been to Florida numerous times without problems. The only time something popped up was when we were sailing out of Southampton last year. I married my stepsons mother so obviously she has my surname and his is different from both of us. Although he is 17, we were asked if we had his dad's permission to take him on a around Britain cruise.

Sorry, I read that wrong, didn't realise that mum was going to.. so I'd do what I do with my ex... he fills it in and say I give consent for my daughter to travel with her mother...

Like I say though, I've never been asked for it but it gives me comfort knowing I have it if needed.
