We stayed in a holiday cottage with a meter like that in the 80s. The owner was paying the bill, but you still needed the shilling to feed through and it fell out the bottom and you fed it through again. If you didn't do it enough times, the electricity went off.

I remember going to our char lady’s house once when she was ill and she had one and my Mother let feed it - if I remember correctly you put the coin in then turned a dial (like a timer thing ?) - odd memories for a young child but it was a novelty

A bob for the meter surely, 'shilling' is so posh.

I remember a court case in the local paper, must have been in the 80s, the gasman came round to empty the meter which used to happen, and did you sometimes get a refund as well ?

Anyway, he went to this house and took the drawer out, to his surprise, it was full of water.

The slightly dodgy house tenant had managed to perfect a mold of a 50p piece, no idea how he done it, he would then fill the mold with water, it obviously weighed the same etc, freeze the mold, and he fed his meter with these coins made of water, quite ingenious really.

I remember that and my parents “banning’ us for doing it was it was a form of begging. Of course we took no notice (and they knew that but had to say dont do it) as we used clothes from my Mothers rag bag she kept in the old wash house. When we had enough money for sweeties we placed the guy in the ditch by the Great North Road to scare the drivers lol (about as mischief we ever got up to)

I was amazed when I saw one of those , in the rec room of a caravan park in Tramore as a kid. I think they were more common in Ireland than in the U.K.
