I work in a school and if the teacher was absent awaiting a PCR we'd just get a supply teacher to cover the class so no lost learning for the children. There is no requirement to send a whole class home now for one positive case, I think the threshold is 5 cases in one class.

I can definitely see both sides of this debate, and how utterly frustrating it is for both sides xx

But... if a teacher (or anyone for that matter) has a high temp and a cough, there's really no question? How can any sensible person think it's acceptable for them not to isolate and get a PCR 🤷🏼 .

We've had shocking colds here, but no temperature and no cough at first. But the high temp is a game changer for me; it indicates active infection of some sort (covid or not) and I would not expect them to be at work, again regardless of profession.

Hugs FT xx

In an ideal world...
Our school has 10 absent teachers, we simply cant get enough supply. Others teachers are covering in their PPA, but we are at breaking point.
The Covid team came in to do vaccinations this week. They did 150 out of 1200 as they were short staffed due to ... people off with Covid

Luckily we're a smaller primary with 8 classes which makes life easier although last year we were sending classes home constantly.

Slight change of subject but that situation would likely have been avoided had the teens been vaccinated before returning to school in September.

That and the booster rollout getting off to such a slow start really make me so angry when everyone could see that it would cause problems.

Alder hey won’t accept any LFT, only PCR’s and Mason has his next infusion next week.
If Mason wasn’t vulnerable then it would be a case of just getting on with things. I am not sure how far duty of care goes at school, he has a health care plan. I have asked for some work to be sent home but they are now paperless and not doing Google classrooms for just one child. 😣🙈
My daughter had 5 negative lateral flow tests but cold symptoms so did a pcr quick was positive. I dont trust lateral flows now and believe if you have symptoms a pcr should be done. Arent lateral flow tests for when you dont have symptoms?

Let’s look at this as we did the one day closure so say 14 teachers each has two sniffles a year and loses one day waiting fir pcr results. It’s around £900 a day for a supply teacher so you are looking at over £12k a year for supply. Good use of money ? As well as caus8ng disruption to learning on kids that have effectively lost a year in the last 18 months !

I do feel that if the teacher had a temperature maybe they should take a pcr but the school has a process in place in that none of us are privy to that decides when a pcr test is or is not needed and in this instance it appears that threshold has not been met. Perhaps the teacher has tested positive in the last 90 days therefore a test is not required I don’t know.

I understand there is no perfect answer but my personal view is that keeping classrooms open is very very important, teachers get colds this is not the same as covid and we should not risk shutting classrooms each time this happens.

My opinion is if teacher has a cold but is well enough to work then should be in class but if said teacher has 2 out of 3 symptoms they should have taken a PCR

Maybe he just has a cold and no covid symptoms which are quite specific according to the guidelines.

Personally I do find it quite worrisome that a school might be giving out private medical information to a parent. Wouldn’t this be a breach of gdpr. Yes the child has medical issues and needs protection but you can’t just ignore the law.
