October is the third most likely month to have a hurricane historically, slightly behind August, with September being peak peak. If you take storms into account, October drops further behind August.
They have even had hurricanes in November, but the back end of October, they drop off significantly.
If a hurricane hit, its normally a day. Problem is, if you are in the Keys, and on many places on the Gulf, you may be required to evacuate inland.
I have been many, many times in hurricane season. I have always dodged them, but have seen the aftermath. One year I went to Naples where they had one a few weeks before. A fella told me the eye of the storm passed right over the condos we were staying in. They were not damaged, but many buildings had been stripped of their tiled roofs.
My advice is don't worry, and get on with it, if it happens it happens, chances are it will not.

We were in Rotonda when Irma hit there in September 2017. I spent a fair bit of that night posting back and forwards to Dibbers who were holed up in Orlando. Sum total of damage to the villa - one decorative palm snapped in half. That was despite forecast storm surges of 6 feet+ which would have put Rotunda under water by about 5 feet.
The simple fact is that there is no way to predict the probability or impact - it's too dynamic. Go and enjoy yourself.

I have a strange fascination of one day being in a hurricane, not something you’d forget and would like to experience the wind speed etc, as long as it didn’t kill us. Maybe when the kids aren’t with us any more.

I'm happy to have been there, done that and got the t-shirt (the locals had them printed up in under 48 hours ) but I'd not want to do it again deliberately.

You might find this article and some of his other related ones interesting :

We used a fair bit of his advice to prepare ourselves in case things went sideways and were grateful we didn't need it
