We've just booked to go this December (quite last minute) and are staying at the Hyatt Place Times Square. (W35th). It's so new it's not actually open yet - I think it opens next week!

Should be clean, at least! Includes breakfast, too.

I have also done the Crown at SoL and I am also claustrophobic! I was dreading it a bit but it was absolutely fine and wasn't as cramped as I thought it would be. You are on hands and knees because the steps are very steep - its not a low ceiling or anything. Get an early slot so you are first up and have no-one around you. Highly recommend. We went up in the middle of a storm - it was a bit windy up there!
