Kindle are probably the most popular e-readers as dedicated devices.

They have different sorts at different price points. Given your fear that you will just throw it in a draw when you are back to normal would suggest the cheap one. However, that is probably more like to meet your prophecy than say the paperwhite which is more versatile, but also more expensive.

Price wise you could get a Kindle fire 8 HD tablet for less money, it won't have as long a lasting battery and may be a little heavy to hold for hours at a time, but does have the versatility that a Kindle reader doesn't to do more things which may mean you use it more.

Never had a kindle but I had a Kobo for over 5 years. My first e-reader was a Sony but they discontinued those some time ago. I chose the Kobo because I can download titles from my local library as well as downloading purchased titles.

I have also signed up to luzme.com and bookbub which can give the heads up on good deals for books which I want to read

I have a Kindle Oasis which I love, it's my third Kindle, the last one was a Paperwhite, I'd happily recommend either of those. My first was one of the early Kindles, the latter ones are much improved.

You can do this with a Kindle as well, just in case people think you can't. You just email it to the devices email address.

The Kindle Paperwhite is definitely your best bet if you're going for the cheapest option.

The basic Kindle is cheaper but it isn't backlit like the Kindle Paperwhite which makes for a much better reading experience.

Once you get into it, I would be very surprised if you went back to a basic book. They're so light to handle a one-tap turns the page, it's just an out and out joy, I find.

If you don't have access to an android tablet or ipad (both can be used as a kindle with the app) then I'd get a proper kindle.
I started out with a regular kindle but now have the paperwhite version so I can read at night.

It is by far the easiest device/app to use. Not only that there's hundreds of free books & regular deals for 99p books.

There's a website called ereaderiq where you can set alerts for books or authors you want. That's how I manage to get Terry pratchetts discworld books at 99p!
