Liquid Medicine in Checked bags

my DS has a massive 1/2 litre bottle of medicine that he needs to take 3 times a day so we are going to need to take it away with us, the problem is that it is a really thick glass bottle so a) it weighs a lot and b) I don't wan't it smashed - I am thinking of getting some plastic medicine bottles (small ones) and pouring what he needs in these but will it cause an issue if the bags get checked since they will just be plain medicine bottles with no prescription printed on them? I don't expect the medicine it's self will cause the bag to be pulled, as it would just look like any bottle of liquid that is seen in peoples hold luggage I'm sure, but more concerned if it happens to get checked for random screening!

Go to the pharmacist and get them to make up enough 100ml bottles with labels on that you need for the trip. You can then put these in see through zip bags and bring as hand luggage. That way you will be sure that they arrive safe in case say a checked in bag went missing.

Also good to get a note from the GP to confirm that this medecine is essential to your son as you can produce it at security and immigration/customs.

If it’s prescription meds you don’t need to put it in 100 ml bottles. Just take it in hand baggage with a copy of the prescription. Possibly get the pharmacist to put in a light plastic bottle.

You or your son may be asked to sample it, but that’s all.

We always used to take a large bottle of epilim liquid with us with my daughters paper prescription. We used to take it out explain what it was, they would swabbed it and it was fine. As above, as long as it medical you will be fine.

brilliant thanks guys - current prescription will run out in 4 weeks so I will need a new one for him before I go anyway so I can request it in smaller / plastic bottles from the pharmacy and make sure I get the prescription sheet back from them (they usually take it from me and don't return it, assume I just ask for it back) and take it in the hand luggage.

Can you go to the chemist and ask them to split it in to smaller bottles for you, plastic ones and get a copy of the percription / letter from Doc so you can carry it in hand luggage?

Quick question... if it goes in hand luggage and is over the 100ml assume I don't need to put it in a clear bag and I just put it in the tray with the prescription?

I would always recommend taking any medicines in hand luggage. You never know if you bag may go astray even if it is for a day or 2.
