How many open day visits is everyone planning to do? I think we are up to about 5 now but no bookings made yet. We seem to be finding multiple uni's with the same open day dates!

We could be doing a fair few miles this Summer and seeing a few cities we've never been to.

We did 6 last year. 4 before summer and 2 after - ours were all at weekends so that was enough for us.

We were told by the school that if you are looking at doing more than that, then they don't really know what it is they want to do - as the courses run by each can be quite different - so they need to be a bit more discriminating.

About open days - we are in Scotland, and will only be applying to Scottish universities.
Ideally T will live at home whilst at uni, but that means Edinburgh which is very competitive, so we will go with him to look at Glasgow, Aberdeen and Dundee. Possibly St Andrews. To open up his chances.

We have had all the dates on the calendar for a while now but none booked yet.
T still hasn't really decided exactly what he wants to do at Uni yet. I wish he would make a decision soon, so yes, he definitely needs to be more discriminating.

It depends on what you are going to open days for.

The student may know exactly what they want to do and have definitely decided on a course, however they might be going to the open days to see what the university, accommodation, and facilities are like. They might be decided on the course but not decided on the university - and there are lots of universities out there to choose from!

When I went and visited universities back in the day I went to see what the university was like. I had already decided I was going to do Physics.

BTW, I don't remember them having open days in my day. After applying to 5 or 6 universities, you got invited to an interview and had a guided tour around the university during the rest of the day.

Well, we’re back from our first open day (at Harper Adams).

The morning was a bit hectic, and the talks overran a bit. And there was quite a bit of walking in the afternoon (not that that’s a bad thing). Nice, small campus. Friendly people. Seemed good.

Hi there We went to Harper Adams yesterday too. Got there nice and early and had a coffee and shared a sausage bap!

Just me and DD went as DH was working. It was a nice drive along an A road and took about an hour and 20 minutes from where we are in Worcester.

We are unsure about the live feed business for half of the lectures to be honest for the vet med course. The 4 times a month trip over to Keele doesn’t bother DD as once a week you have to travel at the uni in Bristol. We did sit in on the bio vet course talk which would be DD’s 5th choice but she thinks it wouldn’t tax her enough so if she didn’t get on a vet med course she would take a gap year and reapply.

I ended up doing a list of pros and cons whilst they were off doing the 3 hour modules and there are as follows:

Cons

Half the lectures will be via a live feed
Course new so not accredited by RCVS (but then neither is University of Surrey which DD likes the look of)
Campus isolated and not in a big town
2 main buildings at HA and Keele not yet built

Pros

Farm and small animals on site at Harper Adams
Specialist buildings being built at both sites so will have all the facilities
Course involves practical from start
Keele specialises in scientific part and HA actual animals so best of both worlds?
New course so constantly being monitored by RCVS
Not far from home
Accommodation reasonably priced (I did prefer the rooms in the self catered block as newer and nicer)
Self contained campus with free frequent shuttle bus to nearest town 5 minutes away
The campus felt extremely safe as parents could walk around on their own - big tick as I am worried about safety if DD goes to Bristol
It is similar to Hartpury where DD is at the moment doing alevels and she loves it there.

So there are far more pluses than minuses at the moment but it is our first open day so we shall see. We will go to the Keele open day to see that side of things and decide DD’s home site if she applies.

Next open day is 14th June at Bristol then 15th at Keele.

Yes, the whole live feed thing was a bit of a negative - especially given the trouble they had first thing in the morning with the live feed between lecture rooms in the same building.

DD is still interested in the VetMed course even though she’s unlikely to get the grades and isn’t doing anything to get the experience they require. She’s also interested in the BioVet Science course (which I thought was good and probably better suited for DD) and the Vet Physio course. In hindsight, it was probably a mistake going to 3 talks because we didn’t get much time to talk to the Learning Support people about DD’s dyslexia. We assumed they were going to be available in the afternoon after our tour.

its really hard to get everything seen and done on one open day visit (we were being there, doing that last year ). We concentrated on what was most important to us, and we did go back to DD's favourite after the first open day, to check more stuff out on their second one.

Just from the live feed lectures I think Hull and York do the same for their jointly hosted Medicine course so perhaps have a look at the Studentroom forums to see what the view is on how well they work!
