Spiro is hard to do and its totally effort/technique/ability dependant. If you have started fostair you can repeat the test as a post inhaled steroid test. Did you complete your peak flow diary. This would give most people a clear indication at a glance if late onset asthma is likely. There is no single diagnostic tool for asthma it's all putting together the pieces of the jigsaw.
I kept a symptom diary but to be honest no one was interested in it. They didn’t suggest a peak flow diary. I had to go to hospital for the spirometry, none of the GPs do it, and it took 2 months for an appointment. I was doing what they told me, so I was surprised they were incomplete.

I appreciate that the signs seem to point toward asthma and I get that it’s not straightforward but 2 things confuse me - 1) in December I felt like I was drowning, my lungs felt heavy, like they were full of water and I really struggled to breath even at rest... what was that? And 2) One of my running pals has had shortness of breath, particularly whilst running, so she trotted off to her GP and was immediately told she had exercise induced adult asthma and given an inhaler... how come she got an answer on the first attempt? Not expecting anyone to be able to answer these things, but it’s worrying me that it’s not asthma, in which case what the hell is it.

In light of what you have said here I would definitely go private for a second opinion - the care you have had sounds mixed and there is nothing more important than your health x
