Forget Politics! What About Apostrophes!

BBC News -

A man who led the war on improper use of apostrophes now admits defeat, saying his grammar vigilante campaign has been brought to an end by a culture of carelessness. So what now?

The battle is over, bad grammar has won.

That was the message of retired journalist John Richards, who announced the end of his 18-year campaign to preserve the proper use of the apostrophe last month.

"We have done our best but the ignorance and laziness present in modern times has won," the 96-year-old wrote.

Maybe we should forget the Election and have some fun on here instead!

I am hopeless with their use and just shove them where they look ok

Tom I am the same .

When should you not use an apostrophe?
When NOT to use an apostrophe
Do not use an apostrophe in the possessive pronouns whose, ours, yours, his, hers, its, or theirs.
Do not use an apostrophe in nouns that are plural but not possessive, such as CDs, 1000s, or 1960s.
Do not use an apostrophe in verbs.

This is supposed to explain it but I still struggle 😳

The easy use is when something is missing for example "You are" apostrophe replaces missing A so you get " you're"

The other use is possession so this is Tom's thread which an abbreviation of this thread belongs to Tom.

That's it for me. Less is more.

I love apostrophes - couldn't've is my word of the moment... double contractions, two apostrophes

I'm ok on that type.

I get all confused with things like:
Toms Carpentry Service.
Or is it Tom's Carpentry Service?
Or is it Toms Carpentry Service's?
Or is it Tom's Carpentry Service's?

Hey ho I'm retired now so don't care.

And whilst I am at it do I put a full stop after the question mark.

Oh heck I'm going for a lie down now.

Whenever there’s a discussion about apostrophes it always reminds me of the episode of The Big Bang Theory when they are playing bowls against a team with Will Wheaton, Sheldon gets them all T shirts with the logo ‘Wesley Crusher’s’ they have a huge debate about its meaning and what the place of the apostrophe makes it mean 😂😂
Anyone else watched it?

Ps so glad there’s something else here other than politics x

Tom’s Carpentry Service
Tom’s Carpentry Services - the cat’s whiskers!
It’s the exceptions that catch people out, usually plural possessive eg children’s not childrens’.

Or is it apostrophe's , see that's my problem 😂
Auto correct actually did that for me and I had to put the ' in myself 😊
