Coughing after brushing teeth & SLS free products

Has anyone else had this? In the last year I’ve had quite a bad cough. I’ve been to the drs and told I’m fine. Recently I’ve realised it’s after I’ve brushed my teeth for about an hour. I’ve tried different brands of toothpaste and it’s no different. I don’t know if there’s something in toothpastes that I’m allergic to, or why it’s not been my whole life!

Try a natural toothpaste without Sodium Laural Sulphate.

Yep, we use one of the sensodyne ones that is sls free , has stopped the coughing, and has the added advantage of reducing the incidence of mouth ulcers too

I have something called "geographical tongue" that is basically a red patch that is sensitive to spices, heat etc. The dentist just said it is harmless with no known cause. Getting rid of SLS made it 80% better. It makes me wonder how many other people are sensitive to it. DH can't use shampoo with it.

I am another person who can’t have a toothpaste with SLS.
I hadn’t realised it was also in shampoo, I will now check mine.

Thanks! I’ll give sensodyne a try. I know it’ll be something in it but it’s hard to know what to look for.

SLS is a cheap, reliable foaming agent, hence it being well used in cheaper toothpastes (and some of the not so cheap ones) alongside shampoo, shower gels and liquid soaps in general. Even Fairy Liquid for instance.

Many people are sensitive to it.

some Sensodyne may still contain it - I use Repair and Protect which doesn't ( but costs a fiver a tube!)

I had no idea it didn't have SLS. I used it in the UK for enamel issues. Switching to a normal sensitive toothpaste in the US 2 1/2 years ago would explain why I then developed geographical tongue. Further proof for my theory.

I don't have any problem with it in shampoo or soaps etc though. DH gets a very itchy scalp from it that could be easily mistaken for dandruff.
