Unfortunately the open/closed gate situation will go on until such times as Lake O is stable around the 12 foot depth, which may be dependant on how severe the summer storms are.

Altho THIS video was taken mid July, you can see the toxic ridden filth that is being discharged East into the St Lucie Estuary and West into the Caloosahatchee River that feeds into Fort Myers, Cape Coral and SW Fl in general before discharging into the Gulf.

THIS was recently recorded by a lady in Cape Coral.

THIS video was recently recorded by WPLG (part of ABC)

I'm monitoring the situation closely plus friends give feedback most days - some of the photo's and video's are terribly harrowing. There are at least two other threads also covering this situation HERE and HERE.
This is terrible! I didn’t even know about this, is this a new thing?
Edit: just read the whole post so it’s not new but I will be honest I don’t understand why it’s happening? Does it ever effect st Pete’s/Clearwater? What about Daytona beach side

Hi Tweety, generally the West/East coasts above the Caloosahatchee River and St Lucie Estury are unaffected. Lake O is the body of fresh (fresh = contradictory word in this instance) water where residential/industrial waste, chemicals, sewerage, pesticides, pretty much anything you can envisage, drains down from northern Fl into the lake and causes toxic water issues, usually minor, but what SW/SE Fl are currently witnessing is on a massive scale which began once the Army Corps of Engineers (who are responsible for Lake O and many Fl waterways) began discharging blue-green algae laden fresh water into salt. As red tide (a bloom of toxic red dinoflagellates which are always ocean evident to a lesser/greater degree) lingered this year the phosphates, nitrogen, blue-green algae bacteria and toxins that've fermented within Lake O waters are feeding the red tide, particularly on the SW coast, winds and tides are dictating how far up the coast it will travel/affect. Apparently, from reading this evening, Anna Marie Island has also been affected altho the local council are warning people not to linger on the beach. To give an idea of how damaging the current red tide is, within, perhaps the last two weeks, c270 tons of dead marine life has washed up on Sanibel alone, that didn't include the 26 foot long whale shark, dolphin, shark or manatee. Due to size, the whale shark necropsy was performed on Sanibel beach. Whilst dolphin have been washed up on various beaches, in a 36 hour period 9 were found dead off Sarasota County.

In over 20+ years of travel to SW Fl we've never witnessed anything on this scale due to red tide/Lake O discharges. Lake O has to maintain a depth level of 12 feet, hence the discharges. It will get better, red tide will discipate, it just may take a while longer than usual.

Whilst THIS video was taken in July, it gives an idea of the blue-green algae and toxic ridden filth that the Corps continue to discharge to the West and East.

Apparently 700 cases of human infection due to hookworm were recently reported from Ft Myers Beach. Altho the beaches may be cleaned up, marine decay sinking below the sand is fed upon by maggots and hookworm.

Thank you so much for sharing this. Absolutely heartbreaking, how are they allowed to empty this toxic water into the sea. Those poor animals and the residents who live there, terrible x

This worries me. We booked the Best Western on Fort Myers beach last week (planning on staying 18-21 Sept). I have a weakened immune system and my partner has excema. I've emailed the hotel to ask if we should be concerned, as we booked on a 'no cancellation' rate. I'm also angry that nothing was mentioned when booking (if your booking a beach side resort, its to make use of the beach side amenities)

We were on Sanibel from 23rd-30th July. When we arrived the water was murky which surprised me and we all started coughing(just minor) , towards the end of our week lots of dead fish washed up on the beach in front of our condo and we didn't go in the sea for the last 3 days as a result. It was getting worse as we were leaving.

Good news for us. Called Expedia to advise of my concerns about red tide and my health conditions. They called the hotel who initially pointed out I had booked a non refundable rate but agreed full refund when he told them about my health. Love the area and the hotel but it's just too risky for me just now. We've rebooked at New Smyrna beach

Been here since Wednesday. Seen lots of dead fish around Bradenton/Cortez.
Yesterday we were on Holmes beach yesterday. Slight respiratory irritation and a few dead fish. No smell ,Water a bit merky. Today we were at the beach beside sandbar. No smell no irritation, water much clearer no dead fish. We have also been on rod and reel side with no signs today. Also have a waterside property and again no signs of it this far up the island

We have just left after a week on AMI -fortunately was staying bay side just north of Pine Avenue and had our own pool. Bayside water looked clear and no smell at all but we still just paddles rather than swam. I found the smell on the gulf coast beaches noticeable and I did start coughing. It’s such a shame for people and of course the wildlife.
