I went to the post office to do mine as I realised that my card was out of date by a week. I applied on Wednesday at 4.30pm and had it back by the Monday. Fingers crossed that it arrives before you go.

I've lost mine a couple of times. Once I noticed a few weeks before we went away. The replacement was very quick. Another time I got some points and couldn't find it to send it off and so had to get a new one and also had it back within a couple of days.
Last year was mega panic stations when the day before we were going I confidentally strode to the filing cabinet where I now keep it (the paper part this is) to get it to add it to my holiday documentation to discover it wasn't there. 2 hours of absolute panic and turning the house upside down and I found it in amongst the previous visit's car hire paperwork! It probably will come before you go but even if it doesn't as everyone else has said the license is valid so just point out the expiry date on the back if they query it (which I doubt), and show them the paper part which won't even mention the photo expiry on it at all.

It's not a good feeling to discover so late that you have forgotten or lost some thing you need, especially when we all plan so carefully! For months and years sometimes!
I'm hoping you're right and they don't look too closely, or even better that it comes on time! Thanks 😉 |

If you have the photocard licence then you will need both parts to hire a car anywhere in the world (until they phase out the paper part).
Even if Alamo gave you a car you would not technically have a licence to drive it as you need to carry both parts with you when you drive a car in the US. Even having an out of date photocard would mean you wouldn't have a licence to drive either in the US but it probably wouldn't stop you from driving in the UK (you would just get fined for having not updated it in the worse case)
