Where to, from Tokyo?
We have planned later in the year, 4 nights in Shanghai staying in the Disney hotel, with 1 day touring the city. We have done China before, and that is enough for us.
Then we fly to Japan for 3 nights in the Tokyo Disney Hotel, but then we have 4 or 5 nights free, undecided. We spent 5 days in Tokyo about 10 years ago and loved it, travelling to Mt Fuji and saw lots of temples and Pagodas etc., as well as Disney. This time we want to do something different, perhaps in Tokyo or further afield, but we don't really want to fly as we are doing enough flying already! We would prefer to skip temples and the like this time, focusing on scenery and natural beauty, plus a bit of shopping and hustle/bustle to get the atmosphere, and we are happy to travel by Bullet train. Would Kyoto be a good option for 2/3 days staying locally, or does anyone else have any other ideas in Tokyo or further afield by train? Many thanks.

Definitely Kyoto! Although there are an abundance of temples and shrines there, it’s still a busy place, and you can visit the parks, walk along the river, and there are shopping opportunities everywhere. Also, the only Japanese Style Starbucks in the world I think haha!

Hi,
I would recommend Nikko and Nagano (snow monkeys) from Tokyo as day trips. I also like Yokohama. Further afield, Hiroshima and Miyajima are good for a couple of days. Kyoto - but you said not temples ... so maybe not Kyoto? How about Osaka? We love cooking courses and do them wherever we visit - we did one in Osaka in Dec. You can also go to the castle and day trip to Nara, mount Koya (Koyasan) and Uji, home if green tea is close. Have fun |

Thanks very much for all the replies. Happy to do Bullet Train and stay over a couple of nights if need, so quite a bit to research to do, which is perfect. Looking forward to deciding where to go and what to do. All this is very helpful indeed.
Cheers all! Edited at 08:16 PM. |
