We had a similar experience with Avis/Budget at Sanford a couple of years ago. Ours was a Ford Kuga (can't remember the US name) which I noticed had a small crack at the base of the windscreen on the first day. We were driving down to Naples to stay and the crack kept growing gradually until it got to about 2 feet then stopped.

We decided to live with it unless it got much worse, which luckily it didn't. When we returned it we told them about it at the desk and they actually apologized and just thanked us for pointing it out(!)

I've had a couple of incidents over the years. Both times there was nothing to pay.
First one was in Vegas and the back windscreen in a Mustang shattered when the roof was put down. Drove to the airport, told them what happened, signed a document, got a new car. All within 5 mins. Didn't have to go up to the desk upstairs.
Second time was rear ended on the I4. Car was a write off (the Back wheel was hanging on by a thread!). Luckily we were near the hotel and got dropped off there. New car was delivered an hour or so later. Again, signed a document. Nothing to pay.

Our car developed an ant infestation last year and Avis were brilliant at getting us something else. It took maybe half an hour from us walking in to the providing something else, no questions asked. We went to a hotel really close to universal, I can’t remember which one though
