I reckon people in the (not too distant) future will look back and say 'they did what? why?..and you tell me they knew the risks?'
I'm an ex smoker of the worst kind btw, .

seems like an effort to be a smoker these days

apart from in your own home/car there seems to be next to nowhere you can have a smoke now

standing outside pubs in the cold with the rest if the tabbers would be enough to put me off

never mind the savings to be had

This seems to have turned into a bit of a 'bash a smoker' thread.

I've been on both sides. I've stopped twice, both times for many years but stressful events in my life had me reaching for the cigarettes again.

Preaching about the smell/cost/danger to health is like telling someone someone who is overweight to stop eating cakes or an alcoholic to stop drinking. Sometimes there's a reason behind the addiction and for most, it's not quite as easy as just flicking a switch and stopping.

Personally, I will stop again but I need to be in the right frame of mind to do it.

I think it’s impossible for anyone who hasn’t been addicted to nicotine to know what it’s like.
As an ex smoker who had to work very hard to escape this dangerous and compelling addiction,it’s depresses me to hear it trivialised as a nasty little habit and those who do it stupid and/or weak willed.
It could be banned tomorrow, it has no benefit to anyone.
Governments allow, and will continue to allow this poison to be sold legally because they make so much tax revenue from it and, for political reasons, don’t want to be the ones to pull the plug.

Completely agree. I’ve never smoked ( I was put off by watching my Nan die from lung cancer at age 7 , it was enough) but my mum and dad did up to Nan passing away . Mum always says now after 40 yrs she has had moments of temptation and tells me you could never explain the addiction. No matter what the cost you would find the money. Governments need to step up but they won’t as you say .

Overweight smoker here. Guess I’d better just skulk off quietly...

If only it were easy to stop smoking and overeating. Yes, I know the dangers of both. Yes, I’d like to be a size 12 non smoker. I guess I just don’t have the willpower. I’ve tried many times to diet and stop smoking and failed but I will undoubtedly try again and once day hopefully succeed.

I’m certainly not stupid and I would say I have plenty of “common sense”. I’m a good, kind hearted person but in the eyes of some people on here...

I agree. My nan died of lung cancer. My mum died of a COP related condition in her early 60s, even after watching my nan die in our house (as my mum was addicted to smoking until her last). It had a profound effect on us as children (I have never smoked and neither have two out of my three elder sisters). My mum just couldn't shake the habit, despite trying over and over again. I have never smoked myself, but I can't trivialise it at all either as I know the profound impact it has.

I'm not defending smoking but the tax gained from cigarettes and redirected into the NHS far outweighs the costs to it through smoking...in fact it could be argued the NHS would get even less money if it wasn't for smokers

What cigarettes cost £12.51? Your friend needs to switch brands 😊 .

I used to work on a cigarette kiosk in a supermarket (left 4 years ago) and prices were bad enough then. I don't think you can buy them in packs of 10 anymore either. There was also talk of making the warning pictures more gruesome.
