Wonderful , Wonderful Copenhagen ...!
So we were due to go to Seattle about 3 weeks ago now, many months ago Virgin put a new plane on the route and did an offer with Upper Seats that we could not resists, so we booked.
My partner has friends in the Seattle area so it would be a great chance to see them for a few days, as part of a visit to that area. Well the weeks and months rolled by but in the end, of course, the flight got cancelled and we got refunded our money very quickly, but decided to keep the miles boast had paid for, surprised they let us do it with a cancelled flight but hey ho! We are big fans on Denmark and Sweden cheapish flights from Edinburgh airport means that over the last few years, have been quite a few times for long weekends. Fly into Copenhagen but stay over the bridge in Malmo, Sweden where the rooms are cheaper , then spend time between the two. This time, the bridge to Sweden is closed but as we are double jabbed, no quarantine on way into Denmark, and just a test before we fly back and one within 2 days of getting home. Booked all those before we went, found an Danish firm in an area of city we knew, not bad at all at about £20 each. Booked the ones for after we got home, online via just one on the Scottish Govt web site, but think they were around £60 each. On the Monday of travel, got to Edinburgh airport and through security in 5-10 mins very quick indeed but walking through the airport was strange, first time been in one for year and a half. Struck how quiet the airport was, but we went to get a drink and a bit of toast, and soon after we got on the plane, flying with Norwegian. My better half likes the front row if can, so we got that, but the plane only had 59 people on it (think carries around 300 if full) and it was very quiet and no one sat near us. I found sitting watching my iPad in a mask, quite easy, forgot I had it on really. 90 mins later we landed, off quickly at Copenhagen airport and within 20 mins are on the train to the city centre. The immigration guards looked at my passport, but did nothing more than a glance at my proof of vaccination status, thought they would have scanned the QR codes but no. Train arrived in the central station and got off the train and noticed a lot of people with no masks, then went up the escalator into the main concourse zero people are wearing masks apart from us. Denmark has lifted all restrictions and there is no mask mandate, anywhere! We stood out a bit and being double jabbed, took our masks off and never wore them again until we got back to the airport on way home, where you needed to. We had got a great deal at the Citizen M hotel there, we like the chain and stayed in them often all over the place, and it was 5 mins walk from the station so off we went and checked in. Again, no masks but they did ask that only one party at a time, use the lifts. As we had arrived late in the afternoon and did what we like to do head to the local Espresso House coffee shop, for a drink and a nibble. For some reason Starbucks is not as big over there, these shops are all over the place. We go in, order drinks and a bite to eat, and watch the world go by for a while. I do not drink hot drinks so tried the iced tea (normally get a bottle of Pepsi Max) hibiscus and pink grape and loved it. Sweet and sharp nice! One thing to note when you come here, food and drink is VERY expensive I mean very! Those 2 drinks and 2 cakes came to like £23 or so! The branch of the shop is on the corner across from the main square / town hall so lots of things going past all without masks on. The number of bikes, and how low the car traffic is for a capital city, always amazes me. We then decided to go for a walk down the main pedestrian street called Vestergade, looking at the shops etc down that way. As sort of expected, many of the tourist tat shops were closed, but not all, and eventually ended up and the wonderful old department store of Illums Bolighus full of some many nice (but expensive! ) things for the house. After that we nipped round the corner to the very nice burger store called JAGGER do not ask cost and had a very nice burger and drink, then a stroll back to the hotel. That night a Tivoli Gardens (said to be the inspiration for Walt and Disneyland) was a light show over the lake (pond, too small to be a lake!) so we looked round the park area and small amusement park area at night before it started. We sat on fur (fake!) covered loungers and sipped at drinks while we wait for it to start I had a rhubarb cordial that was very very nice. The places to eat in there are very classy and very pricey but it looks so nice in the night I took a few pics of the park but the show itself none sorry! It was quite short and was OK, something nice to watch for a few mins sprayed water and lasers synch to the music playing. Then back to the hotel and bed. Basically most of the 5 days we spent in town were the same, we wandered around going to places we wanted to see, via an Expresso House or two and chilled it was wonderful. One exception was a day trip to the city of Aarhus on the train. We had been a a museum there on a previous trip, and loved the harbor area of the city where they were doing a massive redevelopment with interesting buildings / flats etc so wanted to see how things had progressed since our last visit. We had booked our tickets in the travel office inside central station a day or so before, thanks to my partner working for a UK train company got 70% or so off the ticket prices sweet Anyway, about two and a half hours later we arrived and walked down to the harbor, well one end of it nearest the station, had to walk to the other end to se the buildings in question. Was a wonderful warm and sunny day. Here are some pics: This is a huge car park in the lowest floor of the building above, it has about 20 pods that whisk your car away and store them underground, via little elevator things - very cool! Well 3 hours later we were done, and headed back to Copenhagen via the train and when we got back we nipped into the Food Hall on the outside of Tivoli Gardens I had the chicken bao buns and my partner the ramen I liked mine a lot but my better half thought the ramen a bit bland and thought should have got the more spicy version. Anyway the day before we came back, we went to the local testing centre we had booked, was in and out in 10 mins and within 2 hours got our results all good to fly home. The flight home was a bit busier, we had to put masks on as we got the Copenhagen airport but after that was a quite smooth journey home. We loved our chilled and relaxed time away. I loved the fact that everyone over 3 speaks better English than I do, and no one looks down their nose at you if you cannot speak the local tongue am looking at you Berlin! Edited at 11:10 AM. |

This brought back memories - I spent my 16th birthday at the Tivoli Gardens (I was youth hostelling round Denmark and Sweden) and have never been back since.
That was 50 years ago!

All being well will be back in Scandi next May - Stockholm.
My partner is a huge Eurovision fan and we go to the grand final of the series of shows that pick their entry - called Melodyfestivale. I had to be dragged kicking and screaming to the first one / but it is actually great fun and a cracking 90 minute show. |
