We live near Redcar & fly from Manchester. We go down the night before by train (costs about £20ish each way). I like it because I absolutely hate the journey back by car from Manchester I find the train much better & more convenient as you can go directly to the station in the airport.

if you book later in august you can get even cheaper flights from glasgow. Scottish school holidays may have some effect.

As for the airport, it is really easy to get to (It is Glasgow Prestwick which is a bit further off the beaten track)
