Allergy & dining

Just wanted to warn people who have food allergies to make sure they inform the server at the time of ordering their food.
I have a shellfish allergy and ordered the shepherds pie at Raglan Road. I was not going to mention my allergy, not a chance of there being shellfish in a shepherds pie!
Wrong! Luckily the server asked our group, I said shellfish, she checked with the kitchen. Sure enough there was shrimp paste in the pie!

Funnily enough I had eaten this dish the year before and afterwards fell quite ill. I had not connected the shepherds pie to the illness but blamed another dish.

So please check each and every time !

Yes indeed, or even better, note it on your reservation when you make your ADRs.

DH is allergic to banana (and therefore plantain also) and we noted it on every reservation. Before every meal, the chef came out to talk to him about what he can/can't eat. They are very, very thorough. He wasn't allowed the divine onion rolls at the Yachtsman because the same mixer is used to make banana bread (although it's cleaned in between of course). In reality this was overkill as he would have been fine, but it's nice to know they take it seriously.

My DD is lactose intolerant, and the chef came out to see us before every meal. He'd walk her round buffets or tell her what she could and couldn't eat from the menu: the Plaza, for example, has an A4 folder with every single dish in it laid out with all ingredients.

DD did tell him that she was okay with cakes but he wouldn't let her have the brownie, which she was dying to eat.

At the Fireworks Party she was brought her own platter of goodies even though she was able to eat all sorts of fruit and biscuits from the buffet.

Years ago, my brother was brought his own vegetarian platter for the Fireworks Party: sadly one of the desserts was a cheesecake - and he hates cheese! He's a naughty man, though, and ate quite a few of the dishes off the menu.

Now, this year it was just OH and me on holiday, but DD is coming with us again next year so we're going to have to make sure all meals are flagged up at the time I book the ADRs.
