Grand Cayman last year DIY beat DCL tours off as we saw them go on a number of tenders first.

DCL are good at being fair on tenders and letting DIY guests off proportionally with DCL tours.

Now as a suite guest I should get priority tendering.

The main issue for me is 'meeting time' if we dock its minutes from port arrival if its tender add 30>45 mins.
Correct we were off on the first boat in villiefrance as DIY ers
Wondered what I was worrying about
Not once was there a queue to get on or off but we were always ready as soon as deck one opened
Not sure what it would be like for la spezia as it tends to be busy for Rome

It just depends on the times for you and the DCL tours, they will meet somewhere on the ship, and have a set time. Now lets say they have ten coaches to Florence all at 8.30am. Then the tenders and coaches are ready, well DIY guests will have to wait whilst the contingent of those coaches gets off, as its a long way to Florence and once started they all need to go. But generally if you are early to the tender station, or if docked security you can get off before DCL tours. On all my cruises if DIY I have beaten the tours off.

I am not sure how it works
Probably costs more to dock or is first come first served
Bad memory but we had another port where we docked but others were tendering
Was not Pisa as it was later in the holiday
My 13 year old has the grey cells I just have the purse as long as I do not lose it

Up to this year it has been a tender port, then other cruise lines have started to dock, I would assume actually there are 'extra' costs of tendering, ie the boats and crew and the fuel, but the docking price might be more.

Other cruise lines have done it and DCL random this year, maybe they will get there act together for 2014.

To be honest, DCL should try and get slots in Livorno as well as docking its far closer to Piza and Florence.
