NYC at Christmas...

Who's been for Christmas Day?

Thinking of going this year.

I've been once before (10 yrs ago, was with college) but OH has never been. Is it as magical as it would appear to be lol?

We went 2 years ago for Christmas, arriving on the 23rd and leaving on the 27th.
It was lovely with lights and decorations and shop displays, especially around Rockefeller Centre and Saks 5th Avenue. However, this area was very busy and I mean rammed, in the evening. You couldn't walk freely along the pavements you just had to shuffle along shoulder to shoulder with the rest of the crowd. Not recommended if you don't like crowds (my DD13 was not happy and worried about getting separated from us) but fine if you're happy in a mob.

We went on a bus tour to Brooklyn on Christmas Eve to see the Christmas lights displays in all the houses - highly recommended.

On Christmas Day we went to OWO in the day and ice skating in Central Park in the evening, which I would describe as magical (even though it galled me to be handing over money to a Trump business).

We had fun and would go again at that time of year.

We went 2 years ago but we did leave on the 23rd. It was completely magical, the atmosphere, decorations, weather. We loved seeing Santa in central park, the Christmas floor in Macy's, the rockefeller tree etc. We did top of the rock, which was fab and we also visited woodbury common, which I highly recommend for shopping. It was busy, but no busier than when we visited in the summer.

Hi. Visited in the days immediately prior to Christmas. Fantastic experience seeing the city in a different context, but - as said above - exceptionally busy!

Thanks everyone! Any hotel recommendations?

I saw a deal with Jet2 flying Man - New York with a hotel near Times Square for £1750ish, 2 adults, 6 nights. Thought that seemed reasonable - but is it? Haha

That sounds reasonable. We went 3 years ago over Christmas. We stayed on Long Island City which was slightly cheaper but convenient.

I did a trip report - click on the link in my siggy

We went for Christmas about 11 or 12 years ago. The tree at the Rockefeller Centre is great but other than that it is one of the least Christmassy places I have ever been to!

We had booked somewhere for Christmas lunch but when we arrived they were not doing anything special it was just a normal day. We left. Couldn’t find anywhere else open. It was a wash out, wouldn’t go for Christmas Day again.

Another year we were in Las Vegas for Christmas and it was the same, barely acknowledged. We conclude that Christmas is not as big a deal in the US, it seems to be politically incorrect to even say the word. “Happy holidays”..
