One week to go - not for results but for leaving.
Slowly getting there - though need to start his packing this weekend. One bag, maximum 23kg I need to look up his hand luggage allowance. I think he should also be able to get away with a wheely case plus his “laptop” bag but need to see the weight limit for that. We also need to pay for his accommodation (€2100 for the year ) but he didn’t get the official letter as to how to so he has chased that up! He has booked his immigration appointment for his resident’s card. He has done the pre-inscription for his courses (and has been given the credits for the compulsory maths and english ones!). This week is going to be busy - as well as getting him ready, MIL is in hospital so lots of time needed there. This time next week I am going to be a mess I know. DS not at all! |

So pleased she managed to change, it must have been very stressful though.
Georgia is more stressed about her accommodation choice than her results at the moment 😂 She has to put in 1st and 2nd choice, she is very happy with her 1st choice, but many others could only be chosen if put 1st, so she was limited with her second choice and had to settle with accommodation a fair distance out of the city (which she doesn’t really like as she likes to go wandering around shops, museums and parks in the day so city centre is more suitable) However Bristol say that she may not get either of her choices, and we heard many don’t get their choices. So she has no idea where she will end up and they only offer one option so if she doesn’t like it, she’s stuck with it (unless there is a swap option as with your DD, so we will check this) I really can’t understand why some universities make the housing so complicated. It’s a stressful time for the new students anyway, then to mess up the accommodation makes it even more stressful. Plus, as the accommodation is so expensive anyway, it’s annoying to think she could be stuck in something unsuitable and she still has to pay the high rental cost. I know private rentals are available but for the first year it should be simple and the university should be helpful in making the transition from home to uni living easier I feel Rant over 😂😂 |

Oh Mel, I can only imagine how you feel. It’s hard enough for all of us but with your DS going so far away it must be very stressful for you right now. But it’s so good that he is looking forward to it and I’m sure you will be able to keep in touch easily when he is there and have some lovely holidays visiting him 😀 We will all be here to support you next week xx

It does seem so unfair and makes a stressful time even more stressful.
I know some of DD’s friends are in the same boat as yours. We’ve been very lucky. DD’s accomodation was allocated a few months ago, she was fortunate enough to get her first choice and has even been chatting online to another girl in her flat!

Yes, that’s another point, Georgia hasn’t been able to talk to anyone in her halls or uni yet as she hasn’t been allocated accommodation. Even when she gets her accommodation allocated, the week after results, she won’t know which block/floor of the halls she is in as that is only known when she picks the key up on moving in day

If Georgia doesn't get her first choice, as far as I am aware she doesn't have to accept her second choice either, she could opt to stay in non uni accom. There are loads and loads of private rented halls in Cardiff where students from all three universities live. I know several kids in there and they all love it. It's halls, it has the uni vibe, it's a bit cleaner and nicer than the actual halls and all very centrally located. They are liberty living halls but other providers are available.
Are there similar in Bristol? They go very quickly after clearing so would need to be ready to pounce. |

I think there are a few in Bristol but they are more expensive and the ones I looked at were 52 weeks let whereas uni accommodation is around 42 weeks. They would be difficult to get too as they are open to both University of Bristol students and UWE.
It may be worth looking into if she is completely unhappy with what is offered by the uni. |

Yes, more expensive possibly, but there I think in the main you tend to pay for what you get. And I don't mean quality of finish necessarily I mean being colocated with a lot of other students, location of building, halls feel.
Accomm duration is interesting though. Bear in mind the cast majority of year 2 accom has to paid for from 1july, even if not living there until September. It is worth noting for parents too that the push for year 2 accom will start around Dec this year, with most booking theirs in Jan Feb. Kids / you will need to ante up first month's rent, deposit (often equivalent to a month's rent) and an admin fee of £1-200. Plus you will have to sign your life away as a guarantor. So my learning from this is yes by all means look early, but it is more important to be in a flat with the right people rather than the wrong people and the best location. Be sure of the people. You are unlikey to know them 100% by November this year. If you have acccom that goes for 52 weeks you will either need sept start accom for year 2 or pay double through the summer. |

Thank you, again you have given a lot of really useful info 😀 . It’s stressful thinking that year two accommodation needs sorting so early, it barely gives them time to know others well enough to want them as possible home sharers. I agree it’s far more important in year two to have friends as room mates than being in a certain location though.
Very expensive having to pay in January for July accommodation too, especially as they won’t be moving in until September 😔 |

It is worth remembering that private halls often have different terms and conditions to University halls and the landlords are generally far less forgiving, particularly if students need to leave their accommodation for whatever reason. Having the University as your landlord is generally better than a private company.
