The Keys

Anyone got any recommendations for a few nights in the Keys ? Where to stay, what to see?

DM & DF are flying out with us (shame to waste that nice big villa) into Miami and are thinking about heading south for a few nights before joining us in Orlando

We went to the keys on our honeymoon in 1992, we stayed on Key Largo but travelled up and down all the keys that week. Apart from Key West none of them had that much on them (remember this was 1992) but we did like the John Pennekamp National park on Key Largo, it’s a coral reef and did glass bottom boat trips. As it’s the first major Key that you come too, and you could visit it for the day.

I word of warning Key West after dark is not a place for children and I would not take mine there. Some very strange people and quite an adult theme.

The Keys are also is not like any other part of the states I have visited, very laid back none of the “have a nice day how can I help you”, culture of Orlando, and there are no major shops or malls on the keys.

We were there in 1991 and felt exactly the same as Stuart.

They might as well be 1 million miles from Orlando as the culture is totally different. We went there to scuba dive and spent 8 days diving in John Pennekamp National park on Key Largo.

We did drive to key west one day and stayed for the fantastic sunset cruise the do from the harbour.

I didn't feel that comfortable in Key West as the people were a bit strange

And like Stuart there is no way i would take my kids to the Keys as they would be bored stupid within 3 minutes.

Another one here who's been to the Keys.

We got as far as Key Largo and stayed at Ho Jo's for my birthday - no kids then, honeymoon trip.

They did have the original "African Queen" - but it had been shipped to California as part of a tribute to John Huston.

Didn't get to Key west as wanted to travel up the Gulf Coast back to Orlando.
