Dining without DDP

We are staying in Vista Cay Resort on I-Drive and as we are visiting other parks have not taken the Disney Dining Plan.

For veterans of Orlando what would your suggestions be for dining out, breakfast and evening dinner?

Is it advisable to have a big breakfast and take a snack to the parks?

To keep within budget we will be cooking / eating in the accommodation on some evenings.

Also I see that lots of threads mention discount cards or vouchers, any idea on links for these or how we get them?

Thanks

You can only have the Disney dining plan of staying onsite . Loads of lovely places to eat offsite . Longhorns, millers ale house , Bahama breeze, teak neighbourhood grill , I hop to name a few and all a fraction of the cost of Disney. You can still eat at Disney restaurants and make dining bookings 180 out and pay out of pocket if you wish as well.
Reading the Dixonsontour trip report will give you loads of ideas .

We, even onsite, have b'fast in room mostly, toast, cereal etc, as is cheap and less tie consuming than having out. Occasionally we have b'fas tout and skip lunch. Otherwise we would just have snack in the park (take cereal bars / fruits / biscuits from Walmart) or share a meal, and eat out most evenings. W miss in cheap options like Cici's pizza and Golden Coral…Millers is ver good, and they have disocunted specials different nights of the week. We rarely have a starter or pudding, getting something on way home / or having something in the room.

Not heavily into coupons, usually pick up a free paper / pamphlet while out there and see what offers are on.

I don't think we have ever cooked in the room - made sandwiches a few times with snacks from Walmart….then gone to Dunkin Doughnuts!

We eat breakfast in our room. We buy lunch in the parks but we share meals or buy snacks that work for a lunch. We shared a lot this year and it worked really well.

In the evening we ate out sometimes, and bought some ready meals to heat up. I didn’t really want to cook but was happy to heat.

Olive Garden had a great deal. We got a meal in the restaurant and another to take away for another night.

We looked for vouchers as well. Sweet Tomatoes is a favourite and they always have vouchers.
Friendly s on idrive was very reasonable.
Perkins/ Denny’s/IHOP are all cheap too.

When we are offsite doing it cheaply we make sandwiches to take into the parks, buy snacks like crisps, fruit, cookies and Take them in, in a back pack for when the kids get hungry.

You can buy a cheap cooler from walllmart that we use to keep the food cool in the car boot. Also keep frozen bottles water in the cooler for when you come out the parks, and take some in with you. You can ask for free tap water in all food locations and they have to give it to you, and fill water bottles from the fountains. Take a small squizy juice of kids don't like the Taste.

There are loads of ways to keep the budget down. We never buy food in Disney if we don't have the free dining far to expensive.
