Worked for TPE for 11 years and what I will say is get the flexi tickets if you ain’t sure. If your flight is on time and you miss your booked train it’s a whole new ticket sadly and the barrier staff are ruthless and won’t let you through with the older ticket. Likewise if you have an advance ticket for the later train and are through early they won’t let you through the barrier to try get the earlier one. So my advice is either get the open ticket or buy for the later one and go for coffee 👍

You can also purchase fast track immigration.

We usually take the train to/from Manchester airport and buy an Any time ticket, too stressful for me and as previous poster says barrier staff are most unhelpful.

We've waited 1.5 hours for our bags at man before

We always book an advance ticket and leave at least 2 hours after arrival, it is a long time but when we land on time we just take our time, go and freshen up and head to greggs for a bacon sarnie and a cup of tea. This year we walked to T1 from T2 as the greggs there has lots of seats and tables and also the walk from T2 to T1 took another 10 minutes off the wait time.

From TPE staff I have spoken to they have told me that if your flight landed on time but there was a problem at passport control or a delay with your bags as long as you had left at least an hour from arrival time to your train they will endorse your ticket at the station office for the next train.

As for barrier staff not letting you through this could easily be sorted by buying a single to Manchester for about £4.

So we would def have at least one hour...
We've had need to use TPE's Easement 3 times due to flight delays. Whilst ticket endorsing, last May, the Man Airport station ticket desk clerk advised updated Easement conditions require an hour atween landing to train, as we're hand luggage only we allowed 50 mins. Our VA flight delayed by 30 mins, landed at 8am, we missed our 8.17am train by 2 minutes. The clerk endorsed tickets for the 9.17am but as the new timetables had caused chaos it was cancelled, we jumped on the train to Man Piccadilly and onward to Durham from there.

Due to many travellers taking a lend by booking earlier trains believing the desk would ticket endorse (they oft did), TPE tightened Easement conditions firmly stipulating they'll only endorse tickets for delayed flights shown on their screen. That said, if allowing in excess of an hour atween plane to train and one faced a genuine airport delay out of their control, I'd politely speak to the Station Manager.

Thanks for all replies :-) Bit the bullet and went for the return tickets where can travel on any train on way back. As there is only one direct train every hour from Manc Airport to the North East if we miss a convenient train and will have to hang around, could we pay for a ticket from Manc Airport to Picadilly and then just get on one of the transpennines there? Just so we would have more options of things to do/places to sit?

I don't know the answer to that Pink - we prefer the hourly, no change, train to Durham (usually 17 mins past the hour), there's also a change at York or Leeds at 47 mins past the hour. As you've purchased an anytime ticket you can board either of those, therefore, IMHO, for the sake of 30 mins it's not worth what you suggest.

If you have got a standard return ticket either off peak or anytime you can get any train into Manchester and pick up a train home from there, you don't need to buy another ticket. You can actually get on and off as many times (Manchester, leeds, york etc) as you want between MIA and your destination all the way to the north east with standard return tickets as long as you keep travelling in that direction.
