I think a quick word with a manager would have sorted this situation. I certainly don't see $99 in the same price range as $57. Server boosting his tip there maybe?

Well, I don't know if the server wanted to boost their tip, but as far as I'm concerned, I would have deducted the wine price difference from that server's tip. And, in case of any kind of remark regarding by tipping etiquette, I probably would have answered that the tip I left was in the "same price point" as the suggested tip on the receipt.
and if tip was automatic (party of 6 or larger) I would have had a word with the manager and have that tip rectified some guests don't like to *complain* and just suck it up, and that's exactly what some servers are counting on. You're with friends, they expect you won't be that guest who will argue in front of friends, or maybe work colleagues, or whatever. I just don't like overcharges, hardsells, or being misled (or more strongly, being lied to) and I always let them now, even if I sometimes get some appalled looks from my fellow diners |
