I want to go now!

Rope Drop
Hi all So I leave for Disneyworld on the 19th December for 2 weeks. I’ve always wanted to do rope drop each time I’ve been but never managed too. Is it true that Rope drop is only available to off site guests when there is no magic hours that day? Every day I’ve planned to go there is magic hours (7am-8am) Park then opening at 8. Anyone got any advice regarding this. Thankyou

Rope drop is simply for the park opening and if the park has morning extra magic hours then you will not be allowed through the ticket styles. You'd have to wait around an hour after rope drop to get into the park so would be pointless really.

Only one park a day will have morning EMH for on-site guests so avoid that park if you’re staying off site. Other than that rope drop is just when they let you at the rides. If you can be at the front it can save you a load of time for the rest of the day assuming you then ride the attractions in a crowd beating order. Getting up early is your friend at WDW.

Based on our experience at MK back in July...
It was not an EMH day, and the scheduled park opening was 9am. We arrived at the car park about 8:15 which, with the walk to the TTC (we were so close the trams weren't even running) and the monorail over we were through the gates about 8:35. Although the park was still technically 'closed', Main St was open (as were the shops) but up at the hub (by the castle) it was all roped off so you couldn't disperse out to the areas/rides. Only those with breakfast reservations were being allowed through. At 8:50 there was a brief 'show' in front of the castle to start the day, and then the ropes dropped and you can go off to wherever. Advice? Pick a non-EMH day, get there in time to get to the hub by 8:50, see the show and then you're first away into the areas/rides. |

Or have breakfast at BoG before park opening and get this far ahead of the rope drop queue (photo 1) with this view in front of you (photo 2). Our destination was BTM! |

I always thought rope drop at the Magic Kingdom was outside the entrance where the train stops and all the characters are there waving from the train?
Have they changed it?

Yes, Disney changed it at the beginning of this year.
The rope drop 'ceremony' is no longer outside outside the entrance where the train stops. As Yordaman says, it's now in front of the castle. And, by all accounts, it's nowhere near as good as the old ceremony.

Nimbus is right. The "Rope Drop" show is at about 10 minutes to the hour on the castle stage. A Herald announces Mickey is on his way. He arrives with some other characters. There is no dancing or singing. They do the countdown and that's it - all of about 4 or 5 minutes. Really disappointing and a shadow of the former train station show.

That's a shame, probably too many people at the entrance and not enough room with the security checks being in place.

I'm going to print that out and laminate it. Yes, it was getting a bit too crowded at the entrance area. I'm sure the fact that it also allows guests to spend their money in the shops on Main Street beforehand has nothing to do with the change.
